Great article by Nolte. Read the whole thing. Get an antenna for your local TV. Internet for all else. Free vipbox.tv or vipbox.eu for sports (low-rez but free and tons of choices). I fired Comcast last month. It felt great. Now I have just Frontier FIOS for $30/month. No more of my money supporting Obama and the DNC, via Comcast donations.

Did it July 1st.

Everyone watches TV far less and they are absolutely in love with older era shows we pick up on HD antenna.

There are a lot of new over-the-air options that are free. Mostly older rerun networks that most of us would appreciate anyway (MeTV, Antenna TV, etc.)

Only downside is that the FCC has scheduled an auction for next year where TV broadcast license holders can put their spectrum up for bids to cell phone carriers. Some of these stations are only remaining on the air to secure their rights to their channel until they can sell it off to the highest bidder. OTA TV channels may start dropping like flies in 2 to 3 years.

The biggest thing keeping me from cutting cable service is I watch a lot of sports & like to flip back & forth between games (and I don’t like to steal).

We have been cable free for over a year. We watch Netflix, Huluplus, and amazon prime on our roku.

Question for you bkopto, I am using verizon fios, but my internet is at least 3x what you are paying. Does your system run netflix and such on your tv ok?

An antenna doesn't really work well where I live. But I have rid myself of all the talking heads networks, sports I don't watch, those sappy women's channels and MTV and its numerous clones. These days I watch a lot of Netflix. $8 a month and I can get some of my favorite shows.

Cord cutting is fine. Cable is fine for some.

Can I cut the cable ...Comcastic...and still get LIVE harness racing from the local track?

No.

Can I get the Pennsylvania Cable Network that features tours of state factories, landmarks, and does a wonderful job with the State Farm Show in January and things like state sports coverage and legislative coverage?

No.

All those wonderful apps like on Roku and smart appliances promise being able to watch news and sports but in most cases it is delayed, segments or a PPV.

I want to see live coverage of events.

Can I port my DVR to other devices?

Possibly but on my cable provider I can now do that sometimes by voice control.

So far there is almost NOTHING I have found on Netflix or Amazon Prime that will stream. I have to wait for the DVD.

Bottom line I AM NOT thrilled with cable especially the now $180/month bill BUT mrs p6 and I do not go out much. It is a decent entertainment expense for us considering our costs of transportation.

I have tv now for sports, faith channels, (EWTN), and Animal Planet. The news channels are not what they used to be.

I am looking at with interest in Frontier.

I ditched cable TV last year and don’t really miss it. I have a Roku box. They carry more and more channels, including One America News (OAN).

I bought Roku for 50 bucks. Biggest waste of money...ever. I can watch movies, with commercials. Or...I can pay to play the movies without commercials.

Over the air for 11 years now...and we occasionally get new channels. I miss a few shows that I liked on cable, but those can be watched on youtube...literally the ‘delay’ on my favorite show is only 1 week, and it costs $1.99 to buy it on Youtube.

Watching over the air tv changes the way you watch tv...no more mindless channel flipping, or wall to wall news coverage of the latest distraction. Especially no more endless hours of rot-gut cartoons for the kids. Hard to explain, but too much cable can put you into a ‘funk’, and its refreshing to get out of that.

Sadly you need a fiber optic internet connection. I only have DSL so it’s a no go for me.

I’m cutting my cable on Saturday. Good riddance.

I want to put up an outside antenna, but not sure about their range. I have a couple of local stations about 70 miles to my NNE and a bunch to my S at about 70 miles.

I’ll use internet, Netflix, Roku and hope to get local channels at some point if I can work out the antenna selection.

The only reason we don’t is sports. We are sports fans, especially college football, and we rarely watch tv other than that. If I could get NFL, NCAA football and baseball, plus sports highlights ESPN style I’d pry the dish off the side of my house right now.

Bottom line is you can cut the cable, the bundling, and just get what you want OTA or via internet devices like Roku, Amazon and such.

If you are in a good reception area, good for you. You WILL get a nice selection of channels. If you are behind a hill, outside the range...then not so much and you will need a pretty fast internet connection which will cost money.

Essentially everything will become PPV. Net connection $, channels you want more $ per channel.

So let’s say you take a $30/month net connection, then Netflix, Amazon at IIRC $10 each per month, and now add in Hulu and few other net channels which may or may not netcast in delay or segments. That’s another $5 - whatever you subscribe to per month.

Easily $75+ per month. Plus does that include the costs of devices like Roku or a DVR?

If that works for you fine. Doesn’t work for me.

FWIW Frank Gifford a long time ago said everything would be PPV. Want to watch an NFL game? Pay for each game - $$$ - or buy a package that includes games you may not want.

I got an antennae a while back and the TV we watch is true HD. We’ve got more TV than we can watch. And it was fun to tell them to stick it.

I still have Comcast cable for $53 a month. I haven’t been able to find a cable provider in my neighborhood. I’m am looking.

Thanks for the vipbox.tv for sports. Is the address www.vipbox.tv?

Get an antenna for your local TV

That option does not necessarily help. I live far enough away from broadcasts that I could pick up maybe 3 channels.

Broadcast signals have weakened significantly with the increase in cable & satellite TV.

I live in an apartment complex, so only an indoor antenna is a viable option. Again, I might pick up 3 channels.

Internet has a massive amount of material. Notice, however, that more and more network websites that have full episodes or events also require viewers to log in through their provider (satellite or cable). No provider, no access.

Netflix and Amazon Prime are excellent alternatives. I usually watch more via Netflix in any given week than I do watching cable TV.

I have been on antenna and broadband internet for a year and a half.

The content is far better, though I had to struggle to see the FOX GOP debate, but OI saw it live.

Effem! Cable is dead! Cut The cord!
