Columnist and former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan said that a significant slice of the Republican Party would take a walk on GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump and you could have a Goldwater situation, and questioned the general election viability of other candidates Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Ben Carson on Mondays Sean Hannity Show.
Buchanan was asked whether Trump should pledge not to run as a third-party candidate. He answered that while this is a political decision for Trump, it would be hard for the Republicans to win if he runs third-party. Buchanan added, I think it would be the right thing for him to do, to take that pledge, because I think it would enhance his strength inside the Republican Party. It would remove a problem a lot of Republicans have with him, and I think if he runs third-party, he is not going to win the election. Hes going to be blamed for electing Hillary Rodham Clinton. And having run third-party, Sean, and taken four states away from George Bush, if I were him, I would take the pledge.
Buchanan also stated that if he were advising Trump, he would have told him to get some substance in there before the debate. He specifically talked about Trumps plan to make Mexico pay for a border fence, and said Trump needed to explain his plan to do so.
Earlier, Buchanan said that Trump, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, and Carly Fiorina are outsider candidates, and that theres a real disgust with the political establishment, a hostility to the political establishment, and I think the Republican Party does not want the establishment candidates who are being put on offer right now....

Buchanan sure is a winner that he was talking about this Immigration stuff before Coulter, before Trump. Someone was there before Pat too, I am sure. Still, PB did his part.
As to any thought of things falling to Cruz should Trump pull out, thats fantasy. The GOPe hate Cruz with a passion.
Not if Trump falls on his own, leaves the race, Cruz would pick up the Trump votes, a vast majority at least.
A much more plausible scenario would be Ted Cruz joining Donald Trump should Trump go 3rd party.
Possible but Cruz worked for the Bushes, I don't think Ted would show disloyalty to that extent to the Republican party. Ted is still too young to take this gamble.
You win! That is the funniest and butt ass stupidest thing I’ve seen from a Trump supporter! And trust me you’ve had some excellent competition
I’d be happy to go to their forums and prattle on about not supporting Trump the nominee is the same as voting for Hilary!!!!
Except. They wouldn’t care.
They only expect those kinds of guilt trips to work on us.
If the faction of the GOP that walked on Goldwater still exists—that demographic is 71+ years old. Is that a huge portion of the GOP faithful?
You know Trump answered the Pledge Question wrong.
He should have asked if I run will Republican party walk on me, they certainly have walked on their core constituency....
But I have to disagree with Pat on this one, if it is Jepito press 2 for English we walk, Trump, Cruz, Walker maybe Carlie, we stay anything else we walk, the establishment is screwed without us.
George Will doesn't have a clue he has it bass ackwards. It will Clinton in 94' after Nafta and the Assault Ban and blue collar union guys stayed home all over again if we get a RINO @ the top of the ticket...
The faction means that type of thinking
You beat me to it.Buchanan just ignored the fact that jebber is dropping in the polls because he puts people to sleep until he opens his mouth in support of comprehensive immigration reform.Nobody I know is impressed with another bush. But you can bet the gope will do their best to make that happen.
You and Buchanan could be right, but even if a lot of the GOPe refused to vote for Trump, it might not be fatal, considering that Trump would likely pull in a lot of Independent and Democrat votes.
You must realize Trump is a RINO albeit a fighting RINO!!!!!
ALSO a wall building RINO!!!!!!!
I’m sure I’ve read stupider things, even just this week. But it’s TOP 5 for sure. Cruz isn’t a “leader” cause he waited his turn in the debate? Yeah whatever, Eagle.
Sure worked out well for Rand, didn’t it?
Problem is, he has no idea what to do with them.
Cruz is probably the only one who knows exactly what to do with the "Trumpers" - he's the only candidate that isn't afraid of Trump's presence and early successes.
Surely your comment wasn't from observation - do you have a line of reasoning to explain it or did it "just come to you in a flash of insight"?
Who do you back/donate to? Nothing shows conviction like actually investing in one's beliefs. How about FR? Just a lurker with an opinion or a staunch supporter?
I ask because we have a unique chance to actually make a difference with the upcoming election and it is time for the disillusioned to get off the pot and take some meaningful action rather than specializing in finding fault with the best we have and not having the conviction to actually back someone.
I hope that would be true
Going to be a hell of a ride in 2016
Cruz quickly shook Trump’s hand, that action spoke louder than any words.
Pat shouldn’t be giving any advise after his terrible campaigns!
Trump is not Goldwater because Trump has appeal to white Democrats with jobs.
