In a blog posted on Friday on the U.S. Department of Agricultures website, the department boasts that food stamp spending at U.S. farmers markets has increased nearly six-fold since 2008.
National SNAP redemptions at those outlets totaled $18.8 million during fiscal year 2014 (Oct. 1 to Sept. 30), a nearly six-fold increase since 2008, the blog states, calling the increase a win-win for all. (SNAP is the acronym for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the food stamp program.) [ ]
Calling food stamp payment at farmers markets a top priority for the USDA, the department is providing free wireless equipment to qualifying farmers and farmers markets, said the department.

These are farmer’s market eggs. Just laid that morning (generally, of course). Organic, free range, with a great round yolk, bright orange. Very delicious, very creamy and worth every penny - when I can afford them. I use them only for eating - never for baking.
How much does it cost those vendors to even process SNAP payments?????
You have that right. I remember, not so many years ago, that a “farmer’s market” would offer produce actually trucked in fresh from local farms, at a savings over the same products in the retail groceries. This is no longer the case.
Yep, and your lowly family farm stand was a bargain.
I’ve lived in the city. I’ve lived in the country.
There are a lot more poor people out in the country than you think there are.
Meanwhile I'm workin' two shifts. Eatin' baloney. Askin' myself, "Why didn't you just learn how to HOOK?"
$43.98 per pound.
They are the purple ones.
There are booths trolling for people to apply for SNAP at our local Farmer’s Markets. Maybe I haven’t been there at the right time, but so far, I haven’t seen anyone signing up to get on the government dole there.
Those days are long gone.
I do have a neighbor farmer who grows the BEST corn....and he had kept his ears at 50¢ each for the past several years.
I don’t know how he does it with ever rising taxes and cost of tractor fuel....but I am very grateful for his harvest.
Once in a while, you can find a homeowner who has a table in their front yard...with a coffee can *honor system*...and they can be quite reasonable.
Not interested, lol. Potatoes are still cheap at the Farmer’s markets.
I haven’t seen anyone either. The people on SNAP just don’t know anything about farmer’s markets. You’d have to bus them there and even then with the exception of maybe corn, I’d doubt they’d be interested in kale and beets. Heck, I have to force myself to buy them!
They don't sell whiskey, they sell corn, rye, barley and wheat blended in bottles.
If you are paying $10/dozen for eggs, I have some certified organic, fair-trade, cage-free, non-GMO, BPA-free, zero carbon footprint fingerling potatoes to sell ya...

Yum! Taters and eggs.
I don’t doubt that. I was merely referring to minorities. I would bet most rural poor people are white.
