Industry blasts suggestion as harmful to the country.
A conservation group that has succeeded in dealing recent legal setbacks to western Colorado coal mines called Thursday for a phase-out of federal coal leasing to help combat climate change.
Its time for the Interior Department to shut it down, Jeremy Nichols, Climate and Energy Program director for WildEarth Guardians, said in a news release.
The group outlined a plan for ending the federal coal program over 10 to 25 years through a moratorium on leasing publicly owned coal, retiring existing leases that arent producing, honestly reporting the climate impacts of the federal coal program, seeking funds to recover the costs of carbon emissions from burning federal coal, and helping coal-dependent communities transition away from coal, partly by using carbon-offset funds.
Stuart Sanderson, president of the Colorado Mining Association, said Nicholss statements reveal the groups true intentions.
This is what we have known about and been telling (people) about WildEarth Guardians the entire time, that this is a group thats not bent on improving the environment. It is bent on simply destroying the coal industry, ending coal use, he said.
He said coal is the nations and Colorados most reliable, abundant and affordable source of electricity. Removing it from the mix threatens energy security and would deprive the federal and state government and public schools of an important source of revenues, Sanderson said.
Last year, U.S. District Court Judge R. Brooke Jackson canceled an Arch Coal federal lease involving a roadless area, and more broadly vacated the whole North Fork Valley coal exemption to the Colorado roadless rule, after finding the federal government failed to consider climate change impacts from the coal that would be mined and burned. WildEarth Guardians was a plaintiff in that case.

According to the left, coal is bad. Oil is bad. Gas is bad. Nuclear is bad. Unfortunately until we find a way to power a generator by harnessing liberal smugness, we’re going to have to stick to these “bad” sources.
Contemptible nut jobs.
The EPA should divert money away from closing coal mines and electric power plants to clean up the - EPA created - massive toxic waste dump into the Animas River in San Juan County... which will go downstream into New Mexico and Utah for years = turbulence from future spring runoff.

They’d also like to see their investments in local power companies go up further through even higher prices.

Climate change? What like getting colder? Wetter? Drier? No.
Getting warmer? Yes.
Just a few places or the whole Earth? The whole Earth.
From natural causes or due to mankind? Due to mankind.
Than you mean Anthropogenic Global Warming.
