American Hunter Killed Cecil, Beloved Lion That Was Lured Out of Its Sanctuary
New York Times ^ | July 28, 2015 | By KATIE ROGERS

Cecil, a 13-year-old lion, wandered out of his sanctuary in a national park in Zimbabwe this month, following the scent of a potential snack.

At the other end of Cecil’s search was a lure, placed there by hunters who, conservationists say, wanted their prey to cross into unprotected territory so they could kill him.

Cecil, well known to those who visited the Hwange National Park in western Zimbabwe for his jet black mane, was beheaded, according to conservation officials. His corpse was left to rot in the sun.

Zimbabwean officials said that Dr. Walter J. Palmer, an American hunter known for killing big game with a bow and arrow, killed Cecil, and was being sought on poaching charges.

Johnny Rodrigues of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said Cecil was lured out of a protected game preserve one night in early July by a hunting party that tied a dead animal to a car.

The first shot, which the authorities say came from Dr. Palmer’s crossbow, was not enough to kill the lion. Cecil was tracked for nearly two days before Dr. Palmer killed him with a gun. . .

Don’t be surprised if he did, though. It’s a very leftist state.

I don't know who he voted for but a self-employed Dr. Walter Palmer of Eden Prairie, MN donated $5,000 to Mitt Romney on 11/03/2012.

It was a lion. There is an excess of lions. Just because people “named” this one. People have seen too many Disney movies.

There is no equivalent reaction to the murder of thousands by the “peaceful” moozlums or the tens of millions of babies being murdered and sold for “parts” What a culture.

...By that I mean a person who despises another for catching a 1000 pound Black Marlin...

Well that ain't me, pal. I would love to catch a 1000 pound Black Marlin, but that fish is going back in the water, not on my wall.

“Not a lot of these great animals left.”

You have been misled by the old media. Welcome to the club.

There is an excess of lions where they exist. They have to be harvested or they overpopulate. Lions commonly breed on the reserves and the excess leaves, is driven off or killed by the existing lion structure.

Lions are in danger due to a destruction of habitat, not from sport hunting. Sport hunting preserves habitat by making it profitable. Eliminating sport hunting is a sure way to destroy lion habitat and place the species in danger.

I can’t stand the truth? I’ll stand the truth and double-dog dare you on who recognizes the truth before the sun comes up in the morning.

Look, the collar somehow was removed. I never said it was Doc Holliday who took it off. But somehow it was removed and a protected lion that was good for tourism was killed. And not in an pleasant way despite Masai culture which is different, I guess, from dentist culture. Let the law deals with this and let’s get back to talking about Planned Parenthood.

Well good for you! But I have to ask, why would you even endanger the fish? It is very possible that it could die during the fight or expire after you release it. If you have no intention of keeping a trophy fish (and you certainly aren't going to catch a Black Marlin while casting for Pompano so you'd obviously be targeting a fish that is traditionally viewed as a game fish) why would you even be targeting Marlin? Surely you're not saying that the potential risk to the life of the fish is secondary to the excitement and enjoyment you'd get from catching it since that would be, well, as you put it, trophy fishing???

Is that why their on the endangered species list? Is that why they lured this lion off a reserve, wearing a gps collar?

Oh the gnashing of teeth over the killing of a beast. Hardly a whimper from these same folk about the 55+ million babies slaughtered and the harvesting of their parts.

I think what bothers me the most is that guys like this ruin it for people like myself, who are ethical and play by the rules. We hunters do it for the sport, food, and needed population control of the animal. Guys like this do it for all the wrong reasons.

I was in S Africa 3 months ago on a guided hunt with my husband. I do not hunt, I just watched. It was on a ranch with thousands ands thousands of acres. It took a couple of hours just to drive across it.
The outfitter owned the ranch in the area my husband hunted . It was fenced in. My husband shot kudu. blesbuck, impala, diker and some others for the trophy head. You cannot bring back the meat from Africa. Only the trophy heads. The meat gets butchered, and sold in the grocery stores or in the townships. The landowners do this as a way to cull the herd, the trophy animals are usually the oldest, and probably will not make it through the next winter.
The outfitter told me that the lions in S Africa are in in the national parks. It appears to me that in order to bag a lion, it is probably a common practice to lure them away from the parks. That should not be done by the outfitters. If you spend $50,000 to hunt, you have to trust your outfitter to know the rules.
I am against hunting only for the sake of the heads. We also eat the meat. Before some of you call trophy hunters names, also know that in some cases, the hunter cannot bring the meat home. I sure would have liked to bring home some kudu, but we were not allowed to do that.

Before some of you call trophy hunters names,

I for one, am only calling out one particular trophy hunter. Like I said earlier, a few idiots like this dentist ruin it for all the rest of us. And btw... thanks for the interesting story.

If you ever get the chance to taste kudu, try it. It is very delicious. It tastes like a beef steak. Not gamey at all.

They should string the guy up.

Hate people who take pride in killing defenseless animals. This story literally made me sick.

Hope the POS rots in hell.

To me, certain animals are ABOVE certain humans.

Cases like this make me ashamed to be human.....and I say that as a huge gun guy.

If it were up to me, this dentist would receive the sake treatment he gave to the lion.

Bullshit.

You are usually spot on. But on this, you are factually incorrect.

I also don't equate any animal life to being on an equal footing with human life.

It depends on the human life that you intend to put on an equal footing. I would not put the life of an abortionist or a member of ISIS on an equal footing with a chicken or even a cockroach. Likewise I would not equate this poaching pig with a legitimate game hunter. By defending this creep we denigrate the entire sport of game hunting.

The collar was removed by the researchers who used it to track his movements. After they gathered their data they removed the collar.

Another truth is the Lion was very old for a Lion in the wild. Or in captivity for that matter. I guess dying from starvation(their teeth fall out in old age) or disease or both would be preferable?

I don’t believe they targeted that particular Lion. He just happened to be in the wrong place. At the wrong time......And then it’s “Goodbye Cecil!”

From what I have read, the collar was on. The hunters tried to destroy the collar and failed. Trackers found the lions remains by retrieving the collar.
