Windows 10 Automatic Updates Start Causing Problems
Forbes ^ | July 25, 2015 | Gordon Kelly

Posted on 07/26/2015 7:55:23 PM PDT by Timber Rattler

Last week Microsoft MSFT confirmed every Windows 10 update will mandatory and installed automatically. This was met with a hostile reception from Forbes readers with over 100 comments on my news article voicing their concern. And now some of those fears have been realised…

With just four days left before launch, Windows 10’s policy of automatic updates has run into its first major problem and it is causing many PCs to stop working correctly.

Apple fanboys will be loving this news.

Not really. Why should we?

actually the Apple fanboys are busy watching the stock tank on their iWatches

No, it's back to where it was last week, 124.50. That's not much of a tanking, in my book. Nor should there have been a "tanking" from reporting a record breaking third quarter with the highest earnings in history for that quarter. SHEESH! . . . and they beat their own guidance on that quarter. They only thing they did not beat were some "anal-cysts" over exaggerated expectations which they had pulled out of their nether openings based on zero evidence and convinced amateur investors THEY knew what they were talking about when they did not.

I have a friend in Italy who saw it coming and shorted a bunch of it...says it’s the best trade he ever made..

Not possible. The short periods did not occur when the stock was down far enough to matter. Now, had you said he sold when it was at 131 and bought back in when it was at 119 for a split second, I might have believed him. However the put options could not be exercised that quickly. Nor did anyone see it coming. . . not on a record quarter. This was insane manipulated trading based on lying headlines with manipulated Street numbers claiming Apple missed the Earnings targets—which it did not, and in fact exceeded them—posted before the Financial Conference Call even started. . . at which point the stock started it's free fall. This stank to high heaven.

If the Italian sold at the high, then bought back in at the low, he was in on the plot. There was evidence this happened. . . as it has happened in the past with the same pattern of manipulation with false information.

I hated how with Windows XP on a laptop, Microsoft often changed the shutdown button to "install updates and shut down" without you knowing if you didn't look very closely. I'd end up waiting 20 minutes to shut down my laptop, often at inopportune moments. A laptop, after is a portable device, and often has to be transported ...

I have one win 7 desktop that has a broken updater. I suspect it was one of those updates that caused this to happen (months ago). Tried every repair, tried retail install disk, cannot download new disk to burn (win7 is no longer available?), have to call ms again and allow them to control pc to get it fixed.

But with win 10 coming out, I do want it fixed.

That said, my biggest concern is what will happen if any of these updated from win 7 or 8 puters need restoring at some time in the future. Our restore disks are 7 or 8 - will it be the same story - no longer supported?

You realize the people griping, since it isn’t go-live day, are running the technical preview, right?

OMFG THANK YOU!

It's TECHNICAL PREVIEW people! That means this operating system is STILL IN BETA! Last I checked, Apple doesn't beta their new operating systems to the public, and their software runs on closed, proprietary hardware.

Meanwhile, everyone starts blowing their gaskets over a beta operating system that the developer very clearly stated from the outset is NOT recommended for the average user for precisely these reasons.

Microsoft caught this before general release, and you can bet your bottom dollar that they'll have this ironed out before go-live.

Thanks for posting.. We were looking at a desktop. I had to install Unbuntu after Windows ate my laptop. Tim Cook and his products are out after he opened his big mouth.
Wow.. Guess I could go with Linux, but is that any better?

Our computer is 7 yrs old, does that mean it will automatically install Win 10? Most of my programs won’t work on a newer version.

Hubby’s laptop has Win 8 and XP so he can run an older version of auto cad for the family tree.

> Are you entirely sure about that...I have not yet received win10, but my understanding was that you cannot turn off the "important" OS updates, but that does not hold true for the optional.

One would hope that Microsoft didn't redefine the word "optional", wouldn't one? :-) Yes, I believe you're right.

The Win 10 threads are coming fast, release only a few days away ... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Thanks to Swordmaker for the ping!!

BTT I am going to keep tabs on this tread. I have a laptop 2 1/2 years old with 8.1 on it and I am having disk space problems. I have been down a road with this so I don’t need help right now. I am hoping for the 10 update but I would like to be able to opt out of some updates.

Microsoft is going to force me on to Windows 10?

Certainly not!

It's optional, and you have to apply to get it, and then you have to give it permission to install with instructions.

Win 7 is a good platform, I like it and have used it for several years now..I am going to allow 10 to be installed on one of my computers, test it and play with it a bit. If I like it I will do a image of my main desktop and load it up.

My reasoning is that eventually, the support for win 7 will end and I might as well get with the new and leave the old behind.
