A heated rally against President Barack Obamas nuclear deal with Iran created a bizarre spectacle in front of the White House on Thursday: Sen. Ted Cruz and Code Pink protesters speaking from the same podium.
There is nothing more pressing right now than that Americans all across this country come together to stop this catastrophic Iran nuclear deal, Cruz said as members of the anti-war group chanted loudly in the background.
He was then cut off by protesters shouting We want a peace president as Cruz supporters countered: We want Ted.
The demonstration, organized by Concerned Women of America, a conservative Christian advocacy group, aimed to raise awareness about the four Americans who are still being kept prisoner in Iran.
Code Pink often makes headlines for its aggressive protest tactics. Earlier this year, Sen. John McCain called the groups members low-life scum after they demanded at a Senate hearing that former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger be arrested for war crimes.
At Thursdays event, they made no apologies for disrupting Cruz, saying they had a constitutional right to be there.
Its very interesting to see those who profess to believe in free speech are afraid of speech, Cruz said as he was interrupted.
I respect your right to speak, Cruz continued after multiple protesters shouted over him, and someone began using a megaphone to drown out his speech.
He then asked Code Pink to send a representative to the stage; the group sent Medea Benjamin, a Code Pink co-founder and one of the groups best-known members.
At moments, the rally seemed more like a preschool playground, with protesters and supporters pushing each other and fighting over space. One Concerned Women of America supporter said she had to leave because she didnt want to stand near Code Pink signs.
But the fight really began to heat up when a CWA supporter ripped up Benjamins sign, and the crowd surged around them.
Code Pink members began singing Peace, Salaam, Shalom the word peace in three languages as CWA supporters broke into a rendition of America the Beautiful.
Benjamin told POLITICO that Code Pink had come to Cruzs rally with the intention of standing quietly and holding signs, but the aggression on stage forced them to act.
Rand Paul, Cruzs Senate colleague and fellow presidential contender, was supposed to attend the rally, but didnt end up coming.
During Thursdays White House press briefing, Press Secretary Josh Earnest declined to comment on the event, other than to say: I was aware that Sen. Cruz was planning to hold a pro-war rally in front of the White House today.
From a different article:
"Afterward, Cruz continued the discussion with Code Pink activist Nate Atwell...[t]he two strolled through the park, surrounded by a scrum of cameras, to the occasional catcall of "Warmonger!" and "Trump for president!"
Atwell, 24, said he came away impressed with Cruz, even though he did not share his views. "He's so much smarter than he appears to be on the television," he said."
He's even smarter than that., my friend.
those old broads are still around ???
Cruz should know they have no right to disrupt his event.
“Free Speech” — to the Bolsheviks — has always meant shouting down opposing viewpoints.
“Bizarre” seems to be the MSM word of choice these days to describe anything effective being accomplished by a Republican presidential candidate.
Yeah, they stood and applauded Kerry as he gimped in for the Senate hearings today.
... Reporters were disappointed once again with the Republican campaign which strangely refuses to follow the standard engagement and won’t be shouted down like every other conservative position. Demonstrators say they are determined to ensure that there will be no debate, period, on the issue, as the consensus has already decided. Calls from Cruz’s supporters as to just who this consensus was were, of course, ignored.
Ho hum...
There goes the WH with their “word-games” again...
Someone should remind “Earnest” that APPEASEMENT causes war.
Always.
And that fact makes “Earnest” the war-monger.
What a smarmy juvenile we have in the position of White House Press Secretary. This Administration articulate their positions via snarks and half-baked twits. Devolution at its finest.
Code Pink is not in favor of peace. They want nukes to be used against Israel.
debate is racist, sexist, anti-gay
How dare you think for yourself!
Whatever ridiculous meme (man-spreading, white privilege) is created by the left must be supported 100% without reservation.
The left are insane
Cruz at rally
I recognize the folks in CodePink like to hold up signs saying Peace with Iran,’ he continued. Do you know who doesnt reciprocate those views? Iran.
In all likelihood the next president is going to be faced with a binary choice: Either acquiesce in Irans acquiring nuclear weapons and risk allowing the annihilation of millions of Americans, or take direct military force to prevent it, Cruz said.
Cruz also spoke about the 24-day notice before inspection.
Imagine if we passed a law that said any drug lord, before you execute a search warrant on their premises gets 24 days notice, he said. I guarantee you 100 percent of those inspections of that drug lord, youd never find drugs. Thats what weve set up with Iran.
NO FLAK... you’re not over the TARGET...
You mean those terrorist supporters?
It’s funny that the media gets in a twist over Trump’s comments versus McCain . . . I wonder if they still recall McCain calling Code Pink(o) “lowlife scum” back in January of this year?
Reagan was a Peace President.
The current resident occupier is a Surrender President.
The only relevant question might be, "On whose behalf is he surrendering?"
It’s pro-war for reasons way beyond that. The USA is Iran’s primary target (the so-called “Great Satan”).
Code Pink often makes headlines for its aggressive protest tactics...better said for their aggressve ‘counter” protest tactics.
Yes Ted Cruz is one of the very few in Washington who is still able to respond intelligently to issues & demagogues. One of the greatest tragedies is the precipitous decline in the level of public discourse over the past five or six generations. As a student of public debate, I find the stark reality of that decline as perhaps the single greatest threat to an American future. Our politics has been dumbed down to a point where Obama seems almost competent.
