Mark Steyn is one of the most gifted and talented thinkers/writers alive today.
I remember when Clinton was first taking office and all of the media were going on and on about Chelsea’s looks (negatively). I was appalled. Clinton was not my candidate BUT A KID SHOULD BE OFF LIMITS!!! Even as an adult, that is plain tacky. Of course it was equally tacky to make fun of Linda Tripp’s looks. The people bashing Trump have absolutely no room to talk.

...So, when the Republican establishment spends two news cycles huffing about theamour propre of a wealthy career politician, they're only reinforcing Trump's critique: that the GOP is a party of "losers" and "failures" obsessed with peripheral trivia nobody else cares about, while ignoring everything that's killing your future...maybe now the Republican bigshots could drop the queeny hysteria and begin talking about somethinganythingthat matters?
I can't follow that! Mark Steyn, ladies and gentlemen!

I do not watch TV news, but tonight I tuned in to see O’Reilly interview Trump by phone. O’Reilly made a complete ass of himself defending McCain. When Trump pointed out that McCain has done a bad job as chairman of the Armed Services Committee, O’Reilly claimed that is the fault of the President. Does this mean he thinks that chairmen of committees have no responsibility for what happens under the auspices of those committees? Things like this is why I don’t watch O’Reilly.
Someone needs to send that pompous ass this article so he can get some perspective on McCain, although I suspect he knows.

Still, we are speaking about degrees of assholery here. I can't quite honestly imagine how big an asshole I'd have to be to tell that Chelsea Clinton joke into a live microphone, as John McCain did. But if "there's a place in our party" for such a man, there's certainly no reason why there shouldn't also be a place for Donald Trump.
That is true. Megan McCain ain't no Miss America either, but I wouldn't make a tacky joke about her.

Steyn. “[T]here was no place in their party for people who disrespect John McCain... no, make that all POWs... no, make that all veterans.”
The problem is that some people took Trump’s words and then made a hasty generalization. For example, “if you don’t like chocolate ice cream, then you probably don’t like any desserts.” And “if you don’t like McCain’s neglect of the VA problems, then you probably don’t like any military men or their wives.”
Hasty generalizations take us away from true sentences, such as Trump is a good speaker; McCain neglects the VA problems.

Forty years ago, John McCain was a war hero. Since then he’s mostly been an asshole.

Two decades back, the media loved McCain because he was their kind of Republican: that's to say, he spent more time attacking other Republicans than he ever did Democrats. And they wanted him to keep on doing that, so they closed ranks around him. Whereas no one wants what Trump wants to talk about to be part of the 2016 election conversation, so anything must be seized on to disqualify him from participation. And, if nothing else is to hand, a sneer at John McCain will have to do...sums it all up....
