Moderator Frank Luntz asked Trump whether he has ever asked God for forgiveness for his actions.
"I am not sure I have. I just go on and try to do a better job from there. I don't think so, he said. ... I don't bring God into that picture."
Trump said that while he hasn't asked God for forgiveness, he does participate in Holy Communion.
"When I drink my little wine - which is about the only wine I drink - and have my little cracker, I guess that is a form of asking for forgiveness, and I do that as often as possible because I feel cleansed," he said. "I think in terms of 'lets go on and let's make it right.'"

Trump did not attend a Rev. Wright-type church nor is conflicted as to his faith—certainly he has no muslim past.
Trump is no atheist yet he’s no saintly figure either. Good enough for me although the deeper faith of a Cruz or Walker is more preferrable. I did see Trump in the audience last year I think at a Dr David Jeremiah seminar in NY— on TV that is.
Well Kart my friend I have great respect for you and I think on this one we will just have to agree to disagree.
My only question is why are you so hard on a guy who told his life story about growing up in the church and taking his kids to church etc? He attends regularly and the guy does not smoke or drink. I just am not getting it. I think maybe he does not feel as comfortable as you would talking about his faith in public. Maybe its as simple as that.
I agree.
Maybe he chose those words to rush things along because he doesn’t want to discuss anything that personal.
So Trump had no choice but to answer any question asked of him by Luntz? He couldn’t just say yes to something asked by Luntz and/or give a super-quick, very short answer?
Walker was praised by Limbaugh when he refused to answer the question about evolution asked of him by a reporter.
I guess I don’t find his comment funny. I’m sure there are many in those so-called “false” churches who are right with God. Who is he to judge? I’ve read what Trump’s church believes, and so far, haven’t found anything “false” about their tenets. There are some groups that promote gay marriage, and I’m not sure what Trump’s church believes on this - since I didn’t find anything referring to it on the web. Having said that - even though a denomination may believe in it - that doesn’t mean all the parishioners do.
This article has not one mention of the Catholic Church. Trump did not mention the Catholic Church. It was YOU who brought the Catholic Chirch into it
And it is a personal attack on me for you to say that I have small regard for the Eucharist
Trump said ZERO about the Holy Eucharist. It was You who brought it up
Enough with putting down Catholics with misinformation and misstatements enough
Leave us alone!!
I can not believe Luntz asked this question and can’t believe Trump didn’t say”absolutely none of your business how I pray and what do you think I need to be forgiven for?
STOP speaking for Catholics. Stop it!!
I think Trump could have had a better answer to the question too. However, after rewatching the video, Donald was taken by surprise by that question. It was totally a gotcha moment - or so Luntz thought so. You do know, that Frank Luntz was the one who came up with the term, “climate Change,” for the leftists, don’t you? Anything for a buck.
Yes it is. I agree with your thoughts.
I was being sarcastic when I said that Trump had the Catholic vote locked up, because I imagine that they may not like his choice of words, and you don’t speak for all Catholics.
You were the one who first used a lot of CAPS in post #85 and engaged in personal attacks.
What it comes down to is you using Straw Man arguments to deflect away from the words “my little wine” “my little cracker” most likely being offensive to some or many Catholics.
Heheh...good for you. Me too!;-)
I think it’s a totally boorish remark. But so much of what he says is boorish. Maybe this is his way of trying to “relate” to the “common man.” Or maybe this is how he is all the time.
Only God knows what is in his heart, whether he is sincere, and that’s what really counts, not his word choice.
That said, he is NOT on my list of good candidates. He is in the same reject pile with Bush and Christie.
There are denominations that do not consecrate the wine and bread, so do not consider the wine and bread to be the actual body and bread of Christ. In that sense, that doesn’t offend me as a Catholic.
Thank you Thackney.
Are we not called on to proclaim our faith? He is so brave about everything else he says so why is he so shy about proclaiming his faith?
As I said the Bible instructs us to pick God fearing men as our leaders. How can you claim that a man who confesses that he does not confess his sin to God and ask for forgiveness is God fearing? It is as simple as that, there is no great mystery to it.
The choice isn’t to agree or disagree with each other, the choice is on each of us to choose a God Fearing man or to choose one who by his own chonfession is not.
Actually, he answered even though it seemed he realized it was problematic. I’ll give they guy credit for shooting straight at least.
I’m not making the case Walker was wrong. That worked for him.
I’m not sure Trump gets a pass on it. One way or the other they were going to take him down a notch with this question.
I think he has handled the press fairly well. This may be a tie when he didn’t do so well. I can’t say I disagree or agree on that. I think it’s somewhat subjunctive.
My parish dresses appropriately, does not eat meat on Friday, does not use artificial birth control, etc. Oh, and they show up to worship the Almighty and Eternal Father on Sundays and Holy Days. Please do not pretend that you know all of us.
Well, then you need to lighten up because non-Catholics see it as a little cracker, Catholics I know (including the wife) have referred to it as that, and Trump is attempting to reach the common man and not just sound like a legal-beagle representing Catholicism.
Well, I was raised Pentecostal and we said “body of Christ” “cracker” or “wafer”, depending on how formal you wanted to be. Pretty much only the minister said “body of Christ.”
