Timothy Egan, liberal New York Times reporter turned left-wing Times columnist, filed "Not Like Us" for Saturday's paper, portraying the Republican field as avidly chasing the "red-faced" "immigrant-hatred vote," calling out not only Donald Trump but Ted Cruz, a Cuban-American.
But first, Egan unveiled a supposedly clever historical sleight of hand designed to shame conservatives:
They were criminals -- thugs and thieves -- a single ethnic group that filled the jails of big cities. “Scum unloaded on American wharves,” one speaker in Philadelphia said of them. Dirty, filthy, foreign. As for their children, they were “utterly ignorant of a place such as school,” The New York Herald reported.
Mexicans? No, the Irish of the 1850s, then pouring into Anglo-Saxon America at such a rate that it gave rise to a political party founded in opposition to immigration -- the Know-Nothings. At one point, it was second largest party in the United States, complete with a paramilitary arm called the Wide Awakes.
....
Donald Trump -- we’ve found your century. The xenophobes have always been with us, sometimes in power, usually not. It’s the mother of all ironies that a nation where all but about 2 percent (the Native Americans) of the population can trace its lineage to some distant land is now going through another of its anti-immigrant moments.
But good news: The 2015 version is a weak strain of the earlier tea. It will flush out those camped in the Republican Party who have long used code words and fabrications to hide their loathing of people who “are not you,” in Trump’s phrase.
Those immigrant haters include Ted Cruz, Texas senator, Republican presidential candidate....and a Cuban-American.
“I salute Donald Trump,” said Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, one of the first to be flushed, and also one of the jillion candidates for the Republican presidential nomination. Cruz wants some of the immigrant-hatred vote, at least 10 percent of the primary audience, that has catapulted Trump to the top tier in polls. The other candidates are afraid of Trump. And Democrats, even the atheists, have become devout believers in a benevolent God, as Trump keeps delivering on their prayers.
It will only get better as Republican primaries move into all-white, anti-immigrant strongholds. Here, you can expect to see clusters of red-faced older men clutching copies of “¡Adios, America! The Left’s Plan to Turn Our Country Into a Third World Hellhole,” by the polemicist Ann Coulter. Here’s a sample line: “Today’s immigrants aren’t coming here to breathe free, they are coming to live for free.”
And for a liberal so exquisitely sensitive about slights against those who are different, Egan certainly had no qualms about portraying Alaskans as odd, if it meant getting in shots against Sarah Palin during the 2008 campaign.
Egan actually does call San Francisco's "sanctuary" policy for illegal immigrants "inane," only to lapse back into long-established Times-speak of cowering "undocumented" immigrants "living in the shadows."
Well, then, if they aren’t leeches, Mexicans are still rapists and criminals, as Trump claimed. What about the oft-deported illegal held for murder in San Francisco? That killing looks more like a result of bureaucratic negligence, in part because of San Francisco’s inane sanctuary policy, than a reason to go after job-seeking Latinos living in the shadows. Still, in conservative media circles, one murder proves the narrative.
After decrying racial stereotyping, Egan again shows his liberal hypocrisy by engaging in the same thing, from the anti-white side, in a manner he would surely call racist if done by conservatives about crime rates.
In fact, first-generation immigrants have a much lower crime rate than the overall population. As to the rapists claim, whites accounted for 71 percent of all sexual assaults in 2013, even though they are only 63 percent of the population, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Latinos, though 17 percent of the population, committed 9 percent of sex crimes.

We don’t hate immigrants.
We hate illegal alien invaders.
That buffoon should do a little journalistic investigating to find out that we’re talking about ILLEGAL aliens, not immigrants.
See what I am saying? Isn’t that a face you could just slap the snark right off it?
I”m Ted Cruz, and Donald Trump, and we approve this message....
Notice he quotes crime statistics that are delusional crap as well.
When you consider that the Dems have been pursuing the white-hate and white-self-hate vote for several election cycles, what’s the big surprise?
We hate those illegals who refuse to obey our laws and refuse to assimilate. They are here for the freebies and not for freedom.
The claims about the Irish of the 1840s and 1850s were entirely accurate. Not all of them, of course, but they had a very large percentage that shared most of the pathologies of our present underclass. No drugs, mostly, except alcohol, which is really all the drug you need to thoroughly mess up your life. But everything else. Crime, prostitution, abandoned children, illegitimacy, etc., etc.
Here’s a spectacular article about the real history.

Egan is so ignorant he apparently believes that since Irish-Americans today aren’t the way they were portrayed back in the day, they couldn’t possibly have been that way then either.
Peoples change over time, for good and for bad. The article shows how the Irish, led by Dagger John, changed their culture and behavior completely over a period of a few decades.
It is the LEGAL Immigrants and resident minorities who have SLAVE WAGES imposed upon them by the crush of an ILLEGAL Immigrant workforce.
So, who is the hater Egan?
Suggest you read the article I linked. One of the most entertaining and informative articles on history I’ve ever read.
Americans at the time of the Revolution drank much more heavily than Americans today, something like 2x to 3x. By the 1840s and 50s alcohol consumption had dropped dramatically, and the temperance movement was spreading like wildfire.
Along came the Irish, who not only drank heavily, they got so drunk they passed out in public, rioted, drank up all their pay so their wives and children went hungry, etc., etc.
Again, highly recommend the article.
Do you trust the author?
I'd like to see Trump start calling for "Operation Wetback 2.0"
I guess I need to retract my first statement. I don't hate the illegal aliens, but I do hate our Government and Media enablers of the destruction of our Nation.
Yeah. Far as I can tell, he has no axe to grind except than to tell an entertaining and accurate history.
City Journal is also one of the very best conservative e-magazines out there. The stories remind me of the best of Atlantic before it went off the rails.
As far as accuracy goes, I think the explanation near the beginning of the disabilities faced by Catholics in Ireland was no longer fully accurate by the time Hughes was a child. They were in 1750, but things had changed quite a bit by 1817.
But the Irish have long memories. Drogheda was just last week, you know.
There is no hate more vile that leftist hate. They see their own hate as righteous. To them good is evil and evil is good.
I am a Virginia Tech Hokie, some 30 years removed from that fine institution. I continue to follow what goes on there and “identify” with the school.
There have been 2 Hokies that went out and committed mass murder, the Korean who shot up Norris Hall and a certain terrorist who shot up Fort Hood in the name of Allah (names of perps omitted on purpose here).
I have no problem “hating” these criminals for what they did, and similarly agree with anyone who feels outrage for what they did and want vigorous prosecution and punishment.
Now, go back and change “Hokie” to “Mexican Immigrant” as a hypothetical. Would a thinking person, who happens to have a Mexican heritage, have a huge problem with someone pointing out and wanting to do something about crimes committed by persons with a similar background or heritage?
I think it is really the lib media who has the problem with the sunlight being directed at immigrant crime. Not so much, or any at all, by legal or illegal immigrants who otherwise obey the law.
