Jonah Goldberg: Trump Fans, It's Time for an Intervention
National Review Online ^ | 7-11-2015 | Jonah Goldberg (or…)

Isnip)......I truly, honestly, and with all my heart and mind think Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters are making a yuuuuuuge mistake. I think they are being conned and played. I feel like a guy whose brother is being taken advantage of by a grifter. I’m watching helplessly as the con artist congratulates him for taking out a third mortgage......(snip)

Fraught with meaning. I like what he’s doing, I don’t think a narcissist can be trusted morally.

"I don’t think a narcissist can be trusted morally."

Well that rules out all Trump AND all the politicians.

I agree that Jonah has some pretty good lines in the piece. He is one of the best political writers on the planet, without a doubt. I don't know if NR takes comments and I don't know if Jonah would ever answer questions, but I really would like to ask him the questions I've indicated.

As for people here in FR who are against Trump's candidacy, or for some other legitimate candidate (such as Walker)... I totally respect your opinion. I am just one voice and I have decided to take a certain stand, at least for now. I would like to see Trump nominated with the idea that he would choose Cruz as his VP. I know that's speculation of the highest order. I plead GUILTY.

But I'm one person. With one opinion. For what it's worth. Maybe nothing. I know. I accept that.

It seems Jonah is distressed by several things about Trump.

He’s unseemly. He’s brash, arrogant and not humble. He displays a degree of immaturity not expected in a man of his age.

He has coveniently changed his mind on various issues, though the true motive for those changes we can only guess at...personal or financial gain are likely- but genuine new perspectives DO occur and he may have actually changed his mind.

Mostly, Jonah takes a tone. The tone is one I’m accustomed to hearing from intellects on the left and too often on the right as well. You need protection from yourself, and *I* am willing to come down to your level to shine the light on your stupidity, ignorance and failure to understand the nature of politics and what true conservatives are.

Claptrap!!!

Jonah pays lip service to our anger and confusion and fears, then discounts them.

I don’t like or trust anyone running. That includes Trump. But I’ll tell you this- he’s in a unique position because of his wealth to say out loud without reservation what millions of citizens, on both sides are thinking.

For that reason I hope he stays in this race a good while.

Valley girls don’t write books such as Liberal Fascism. But then, perhaps I’m being too generous in assuming there’s a chance you’ll read an entire book...

But he is pro-choice.

As I said, many Freepers will not understand that he is a promoter. He is what he needs to be in order to make the deal. His core beliefs are not relevant. What a promoter said or did yesterday is not who he is today.

They are if he or anyone else wants my vote.

I’m not looking for a conservative. I am looking for someone who will take on the Democrats, media, and political correctness. Trump seems to be able to do this.

Same here ... at this point I'd be happy just not getting another Vladamir Lenin.

Here’s one point to respond to:
“You seem to think he’s an immigration hardliner, and he’s certainly pretending to be. But why can’t you see through it? He condemned Mitt Romney as an immigration hardliner in 2012 and favored comprehensive immigration reform. He told Bill O’Reilly he was in favor of a “path to citizenship” for 30 million illegal immigrants.”

and this....
“Trump: You have to give them a path. You have 20 million, 30 million, nobody knows what it is. It used to be 11 million. Now, today I hear it’s 11, but I don’t think it’s 11. I actually heard you probably have 30 million. You have to give them a path, and you have to make it possible for them to succeed. You have to do that. Question: Just how many rapists and drug dealers did Donald Trump want to give green cards to?”

Let’s not forget:
The man wrote in his own book and said elsewhere that he was in favor of Canadian-style socialized medicine — which would put him to the left of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, and on pretty much the same page as Bernie Sanders.”

and...
“Trump praised Hillary Clinton and her health-care reform plan — in 2007! She attended his (most recent) wedding. He donated to her campaigns and to the Clinton Foundation. In 2008, he couldn’t get his head around the fact that Obama didn’t pick her for VP. “I’m a big fan of Hillary. She’s a terrific woman. She’s a friend of mine.”

THIS is a goodie too:
“People tout the guy’s business record. But he represents almost exactly what his supporters think he opposes. He’s a crony capitalist par excellence. He gives to whatever politician can grease the skids for his next deal — and he makes no apologies for it. He’s an eminent-domain voluptuary. He abuses bankruptcy laws like a stack of homemade get-out-of-jail-free cards.”

or...
“I’m totally pro-choice. I hate it and I hate saying it. And I’m almost ashamed to say that I’m pro-choice but I am pro-choice because I think we have no choice.”

“Conservatism is a body of ideas, beliefs, and temperaments. The amazing thing is that Trump is both a RINO and a CINO. I’m sure he has some authentic and sincere conservative views down in there somewhere. But the idea that he’s more plausibly conservative — or more loyally Republican — than Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Scott Walker, or any of the others is just flatly absurd.”

Cruz is far too conservative for Trump to run with......and when you realize this, you’ll become a Cruz supporter. Guarantee it.

He may not be the answer but he is doing a good job. The NRO however favors The GOP-E. We must ride the wave if Trump is good enough and send him to victory. But I favor Cruz and Jindal.

I don’t give a damn about Jonah or NRO...THEYRE NOT RUNNING FOR PREZ. Trump is, and this is VALID about Trump. Answer any of these at your own peril.

All agreed......but again, the NRO is not the issue. Lot of damned Mark Steyn fans here suddenly thinking NRO never runs a valid paragraph. Sorry, that’s just stupid.

And neither is Jonah the point. The points are the many paragraphs attacking Trump FORM THE RIGHT NOT THE LEFT.

You argument is stupid.

I don’t think there are many fans of National Review here. Attacks on credibility are appropriate when when someone is testifying to something they personally witnessed - then character, honesty, bias, etc. comes into play.

But 2 + 2 still equals 4, even if a serial killer or National Review says it.

And decades worth of publicly available evidence shows that Trump is a liar, a Statist and a conman, period - and it doesn’t really matter who says it.

Neither Red State nor NRO are that great. I did bother to read Red State once because for some reason Dana Loesch reposts her articles from her website there. These days just head on over to her website.

They are if he or anyone else wants my vote.

I fully agree. However, with Trump we should know he has none and we do not expect a promoter to have them except to what they are promoting. With other candidates (especially republicans of late) we have a track record that they do not have those they claim they have. Perhaps deep down that is one of Trumps attractions. In a way he will not disappoint.
