UAE executes woman convicted of US teacher's murder

An Emirati woman said to have been lured into Islamist militancy by her husband has been executed for stabbing to death an expatriate American teacher in an Abu Dhabi shopping mall.

Alaa Bader al-Hashemi, 30, was caught on the mall’s closed circuit television behaving oddly before and after the killing, in the women’s toilets of the Boutik Mall.

That was quick.I read the Middle Eastern press often and recall seeing this story no more than a year ago.

he court had heard she engineered a confrontation with Ibolya Ryan, 47, a Romanian-born American teacher and mother of three children, before stabbing her to death.

The speed of her execution at dawn on Monday, just two weeks after the initial verdict and death sentence were handed down and only seven months after the killing, is most likely intended to send a message to the United Arab Emirates’ large expatriate population that they are well-protected.

It may also be intended to signal that there will be zero tolerance of jihadist and other opposition in the country, which has one of the toughest records in the region on Islamist groups, including ones that claim to be entirely peaceful.

Although courts in Abu Dhabi and even Dubai hand down death sentences regularly, few are ever carried out.

The only other executions in the last five years were of a Sri Lankan domestic worker last year accused of deliberately running over and killing a local friend of his employer, and in 2011 of a local man who raped and killed a four-year-old boy.

Just looked it up to check to see if my memory is still intact. ;-) Turns out it was last December and that she was sentenced two weeks ago.It brings back memories of one of Ron White's classic lines..."if you come to Texas and kill someone,we will kill you back".

A friend of mine goes to the UAE regularly on business. He told me that during the Christmas season, the airport terminal, shopping malls and other public places put up Christmas trees, nativity sets and other images the ACLU would deem offensive.

They seem to be very concerned about making their ex-pat community feel welcome, safe and comfortable.

Kudos to them for allowing only seven months between doing the crime and facing the firing squad. Over here, it would take that long just to schedule a psychiatric evaluation.

Protecting tourist industry. The only guaranteed death sentence over there is if you harm one of the members of the extensive royal family.

It was on Oct. 29th. 1901 when Leon Czolgosz who shot McKinley was executed. McKinley died from his wounds on September 6, 1901. Now that was pretty quick. Today he’d still be sitting on death row thirty years later.

I've traveled there several times,but not at Christmas.It certainly seems to be freer than what I imagine Saudi Arabia,for example,might be like.But while there I still had a creepy feeling that if I give the wrong person the wrong kind of look I could wind up losing my head.I live a pretty low-keyed (and boring) life wherever I am but when n Dubai I'm extra careful..because you just never know.

And BTW,don't know if your friend has ever mentioned it but Dubai is where rich Saudis go to let their hair down.At the Mall of Dubai half the Ferraris,Maseratis and Bugatis you see in the valet parking area have Saudi plates on them.

Not just Dubai, but also Bahrain. I spend about four hours there in an airport lounge waiting for a connecting flight home to Japan.

Everybody else there was reasonable about the soft drinks, juice, beer and snacks that the first/business class lounge put out. Not the Saudis. Every time the cooler got restocked, they would descend on it like a pack of hyenas on an impala carcass. The Heineken was the first to go, then any other beer.

I haven't seen binge drinking like that even when I was in college. Finally, the staff gave up and stopped restocking beer until the Saudi group left for their connecting flight. They would go to the back room and get you one if you went up to the counter and asked, but wouldn't restock the self-service cooler. I asked the guy how often that happened and he told me just about anytime the Saudis came in with groups of three or more. One or two didn't seem to be a problem, they'd just have a beer or two just like everybody else.
