Watch: Trey Gowdy says State handed over Richard Gere press clippings in response to subpoena
The Washington Examiner ^ | 7-10-15 | Pete Kasperowicz

House Select Committee on Benghazi Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., charged on Friday that the State Department gave his committee thousands of pages of press clippings in response to a subpoena that was issued in March.

For some reason, Gowdy said, some of those press clippings included articles about actor Richard Gere.

"You know what we got last week? We got 3,600 pages, half of which were press clippings, including articles about Richard Gere," he said on CNN. "So if that is their idea of complying with a congressional investigation, then we are going to be at this for a long time."

The committee said it got 3,600 pages of emails from State on June 29, and said about 2,000 of those pages were the State Department's daily press clippings.

Gowdy would have to refer the matter to the Executive Branch or the whole House.

“Gowdy would have to refer the matter to the Executive Branch or the whole House.”

Not as I understand it - he can have the Sargent At Arms jail him for stunts like that - and it has happened in the past. But he will not, so it doesn’t matter.

Congress gave away that power long ago in favor of a whole House vote on contempt of Congress, or turning over to a Federal prosecutor.

If it could be done, it would have been done in the Bush II years when there were several Administration officials who would not testify without their own conditions.

...oh well, didn’t know that. Why bother with hearings then?

The original idea of a committee over something like Benghazi is logical: Congress wants to be sure there isn’t anything unauthorized going on. A small group is appointed because everyone can’t be expert on everything, so the small group will report to the whole House.

With Benghazi, Congressional leadership was in on whatever Hillary was in charge of in Libya, so when something went wrong, the truth was never going to come out (until years later when most are dead).

No downside for Gowdy for playing along with the DC club.

You’d think some of the spineless republicans would grow a spine after seeing Trumps popular success.

Why isn’t the State Department being held in contempt? Where are the arrest warrants on the contempt of Congress charges? Hmmmmmm? I thought so, just another Politician flapping his gums.....

You claimed that Congress can arrest anyone. That would include you or me or anyone else.

That is not true. They do not have that power. If you or I or anyone else is obstructing Congress’ legitimate functions then, then yes they can arrest upon a finding of contempt of Congress. They can not arrest just anyone.

were talking semantics here, everything I have tried to bring up was and is related to Congressional Hearings where LIVE LIES were told by multiple members of the Administration while under Oath, they have obstructed Congress at every turn. Congress has the Authority to fix this and they steadfastly refuse. Granted it would take an obstruction of some kind to Congress by a mere subject like you or I to be charged and arrested by Congress. That happens to be the point by the way, All of these people answer directly to CONGRESS ALREADY!!,CONGRESS REFUSES TO DO THEIR JOB and they have the power to stop all the crap, cold.

ps not sure what you mean by “lifted from your site”?? Never heard of your site, whatever it is. I knew about Inherent Contempt a long long time ago, I posted an article from the NY times on it a long time ago, the citations someone posted here on FR, in response to an article I posted by the NY Times. Maybe it was you, I don’t remember.

I don’t care as much about your using my research as I do about accuracy. Firstly for the sake of accuracy, secondly I don’t want your mischaracterizations of my work coming back on me.

Who are the enforcers is the problem. Congress does NOT have there own police force. This is held by the Executive Branch of our gov’t. God’s knows we have a corrupted Executive Branch. Even the Judiciary Branch has no authority to punish. Our ONLY punishment is Impeachment and withholding funds that we have at this point.
