Donald Trump’s Appeal—and Its Limits
WSJ ^ | 9 JUL 2015 | PEGGY NOONAN

Posted on 07/09/2015 3:50:28 PM PDT by South40

Donald Trump is an unstable element inserted into an unsettled environment. Sooner or later there will be a boom.

He has shot up like a rocket since his June announcement but likely has a low ceiling and short staying power. He is not as popular with Republicans as Bernie Sanders is with Democrats.

Does Mr. Trump ruin the Republican brand? That tends to be the eager question of those who hope he will ruin the Republican brand. But he’s his own brand. He doesn’t call his hotels “Republican Plaza.” He spends much of his time knocking Republicans, setting himself apart from the party and its contenders.

If he says something stupid and cheap it will reflect on him. If he should say something brilliant and wise it will not redound to the benefit of the GOP.

Peggy Noonan, who I used to really like (it's been a long time), is a Washington insider, and the idea that someone from the outside could make the insiders irrelevant is absolutely unappealing to her and all those who have spent a huge chunk of their lives becoming accepted into the club.

You’re right, it is a lot more fun to just dive in......

Chastened, I went back and read it and I found more establishment claptrap than anything.

And yet you can never, EVER show me where I am wrong. Why is that Bert? There must be a reason after all these tender monents we share you have yet, even once shown me to be wrong.

Because I’m not and the only person rationalizing their bad choices is you. You backed the wrong horse, lost and now are too small to admit it.

If you put a fraction of the effort you put into excusing your idiocy into getting Cruz elected we’d all be better off. But as long as you and your kind try to keep the meme going, you give others excuses to follow your example straight into another lesser evil in 16.

I have no problem reading the article, and I would never intentionally do that. I'm sorry that for whatever reason you can't P2.

But that’s a good thing! Why waste valuable time reading the screeds of some establishment hack...a supporter of dear leader no less?

Commenting on articles you haven’t bothered to read is a noble and venerated FR tradition.

Well, perhaps you’d know she hasn’t supported dear leader in years, and you might like a lot of what she said about Trump.

Not all to be sure......

The dear leader thing poisoned the well. Sorry. If she has that little common sense to support him, then I see no need to read her political views further. If she was a world class expert on something else, I might read her screeds on that other topic. But since its politics....naah.

Ms. Noonan should know all about how appeal has its limits. Her own appeal ran out back in 2007. Buzz-off Peggy....

Oh crikes! Peggy “Blanche Dubois” Noonan who swooned over Barack Obama in 2008.

I understand about the "poison well" concept - but after reading the article, and finding it much less obnoxious as I thought it might be, the comments seemed odd. Here was establishment Peggy getting more right about Trump than almost anyone else in the establishment was - and the posters were just doing drive by snipes, totally oblivious of the fact that most of the article was positive about Trump.

I just don't post when I'm oblivious...

Say what you will about Peggy Noonan, it's true. She is a "squish" and is one of Establishment's loudest voices.

However, she is a very good observer of people and politics and she can write. And she absolutely defines Donald Trump here ... why he is striking a chord in this election (for the good) and why he is not a conservative and has NO real chance at being elected POTUS. And that he is only about Donald.

My hope is that he changes the conversation of the GOP primary, shows the gOp that you win by fighting, not compromising, but that he ultimately bows out for a Cruz (or Walker) who can win.

When he doesn't get the gop nomination, IF he goes rogue third party ... it's welcome ... Madame President H.

It’s pretty clear to me that no one read the article.... more than half the article is positive about Trump ... it’s more fun to see a headline and just dive in ignorantly....

Spot on. In the article, Noonan says this ....

But Donald Trump has a real following, and people make a mistake in assuming his appeal is limited to Republicans.

They think he’s real, that he’s under nobody’s thumb, that maybe he’s a big-mouth but he’s a truth-teller.

He is a fighter. People want a fighter.

And regarding his speaking the truth about the consequences of illegals coming from Mexico ...

The minute I heard it I knew he’d hit a nerve. He said what a lot of people think and are afraid to say. Certainly after the murder this week of a young woman in San Francisco by an illegal-alien felon who’d been deported five times, what Mr. Trump said resonated.

Noonan has defined Trump very well in this article. His pros and his cons.
