In response to the question, “Won’t this politicize the court”?
Ted Cruz, “The court politicized itself”.
George Will is a neoCon tool.
His arguments are void of logic and overlook the obvious.
Ted Cruz is right about this. Most states have this very system in place for their state supreme court justices.
I would add, that I think that whenever the SCOTUS makes a “landmark” decision which effectively “amends” the COTUS (like the homosexual one has and Roe did), it should not be allowed to be put into effect until “ratified” by the states just as any COTUS amendment would.
Funny, when Cruz announced, George Will said of Cruz’s candidacy, “There is none better”. Now that his wife is working for the Walker team, his objectivity seems to have diminished
I agree with Will in the argument that such a move could introduce real problems - national campaigns of any kind are dangerous animals, and I’m fearful of how hard the left would work to remove Scalia, Thomas, et al. Imagine the Anita Hill hearings every ten years for an example.
My solution would be to keep it the same as now, except two changes: one fixed term of 10-15 years (we don’t need to encourage keeping corpses around like we have now), and state override power (as proposed by Levin).
George Will is a snobby elitist who somehow became a legend in his own mind. His obvious hatred of Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz graphically exhibits the GOP establishment’s attitude toward grassroots conservatives. We will remember that sneering disdain if the GOP-e sticks us with another Rove-approved loser next year.
Yet, under the existing constitutional structure, there is nothing that can be done to defrock our secular high priests on Scrotus.
TERRIBLE IDEA! This rides on the outstandingly foolish presumption that the electorate is virtuous enough to demand constitutional virtue in its leaders.

There was a reason to have the Supreme Court being appointed. Cruz knows this.
The fact that he advocates changing it to make it more political smells like pandering.
This might sound appropriate, but it is a complete 180 from the intent of the founders.
Cruz knows more about the constitution than anyone in Congress and more than at least 5 of 9 SC Justice’s, he does not come up with things willie nillie of the top of his head as others so often might do, he thought this through probably for a very time now and I’m sure he has considered what all the detractors would say.
He knows these things are not simple or easy but he tries to communicate his thoughts at level the general public might understand, does anyone think he is not aware of the complexities not aware of how the opposition would try to malign him, does anyone think he wants somehow rack up points, then you know very little of the man and have not followed him very closely which is what one should be apt to do when choosing in particular the next POTUS.
Cruz is right- something must be done to mitigate the Supreme Court’s apparent power to legislate from the bench.
