A huge fault in the Earth's crust near Los Angeles is leaking helium, researchers have found.
They say the unexpected find sheds new light on the Newport-Inglewood Fault Zone in the Los Angeles Basin.
It reveals the fault is far deeper than previously thought, and a quake would be far more devastating.
It follows a report from the U.S. Geological Survey has warned the risk of 'the big one' hitting California has increased dramatically.

Clap. You’re welcome. :)
But there is no air in space. Its all so confusing
Do we know which isotope of Helium it is?
Most helium in the universe is helium-4, been around since the Big Bang.
Helium -4, is produced on Earth by alpha decay of heavier radioactive elements................
Way overdue....
I would imagine that the tectonic stresses have been building for decades.
this could explain the “valley-girl” tonality....
Many in Los Angeles are already walking funny.
Helium is generated by Uranium alpha decay deep in the Earth.
Normally it and Radon are trapped by the rock above unless a there is a change in the fault.
One of the key indicators of a possible future quake is a spike in Radon gas.
Escape from la comes to mind.
My mom remembers her baby brother bouncing up and down in his crib from that earthquake.
That fault runs through the heart of Los Angeles a 7.0 would devastate LA.
I already did...and that fault runs right directly beneath my former residence in the LBC.
That, or tip over.

I’m far enough away.
Helium is an inert gas and has no heat absorption properties (to speak of) thus wouldn’t have a dramatic impact on the environment, even if released in enough quantity to double its concentration in the atmosphere. Which isn’t that much to begin with.
This is different than CO2, which does have the ability to trap heat thus its moniker: “greenhouse gas”. The levels needed to dramatically impact the environment can be seen from ice core data; though these show it’s a much higher amount than is present today. Hence the scam there.
I’m with Hank Johnson. I’m very concerned that with all the illegal immigrants flooding the coastal areas of California and increasing the population by the millions, the foundation will crack and the state will indeed capsize. [Someone pass the joint this way....]
My father was a young guy working as a stock clerk in the back of a grocery store near Los Angeles. He quickly went outside.
Dear God I forgot about that, I will have to buy up all the land on the other side.
Wow! A logical thinker .. amazing.!!!
I mean this sincerely. There is such illogical; ill-informed people spewing so much garbage .. it’s mind-bobbling.
Of course the risk was always there .. they just didn’t know it was spewing helium - making the risk worse than they thought. Brilliant.
