There are people here on FR who are way more knowledgeable about firearms than me, but I believe on a semi-auto, the slide is back after the last round is fired from the magazine.
Half-wit knew it was empty.

Exactly. She heard a distinct click on a empty chamber, so she must have been pretty calm...or she was fed a story to juice up a narrative that really doesn’t need anything added to it.
