Liberals up to and including the president are already using the tragedy at the SC church to try to advance gun control, so it begs the question, what gun control law would have prevented the tragedy?
Assault weapon bans are a favorite of anti gunners basically because they are scary looking and have large magazines. Yet reports say Roof reloaded up to 5 times. Clearly a new AWB would not have prevented the massacre.
What about universal registration? The answer is simple, it wouldn't. Universal registration is only valuable to the police to track the last person who bought the gun from a licensed dealer.
And the latest darling of the anti-gunners, universal background checks for all gun transfers. From the news reports the shooter had never been convicted of a felony or domestic violence so even if he had to pass a background check, he would have passed.
Then there is the old standby, waiting periods before you can take possession of a firearm. Wouldn't have helped since he obtained the firearm months before the crime. Besides if someone is planning to commit a mass killing, they would not be deterred by waiting a few days or even a few months. It didn't stop Adam Lanza from murdering his mother and taking her guns.
Anti-gunners would love to force everyone to undergo a psychological evaluation before "allowing" them to own a firearm. To a liberal wanting to own a firearm is enough evidence to say you are too paranoid to have one. However, that aside, Dylan Roof's friends all say that aside from the occasional racist joke, he showed no signs of murderous racism and no mental disorder. Also, almost anyone who was planning on murdering multiple people would be clever enough to conceal it from a psychologist.
So what does that leave? Total confiscation from the public? Besides being unconstitutional, it would start a civil war that would not be pretty. Also it didn't stop a person in China from getting a gun and shooting 5 people.
So, tell me, Mr. President, what would have prevented this?
NINE people. Killed four.
How would the lefties feel if they had to submit a request every time they wanted to write an article or letter to the editor.
But ultimately it isn’t about stopping crime, it is about controlling the populace, so they can trickle out ineffective gun control chipping away at rights, until law abiding citizens have no real gun rights left.
True. It’s not about guns. It’s about control.
Had this been a normal Sunday service, I would expect some parishioners would have been armed. I believe it was just a small prayer group in the church at the time. Tragic.
AND... btw.. that carnage happened on Jun 9, 2015.
So it's not even 'old news'.
Requiring everyone to carry some type of firearm would’ve prevented this trash from even thinking about it.
Chemical sub-trance meds, and a good solid “I hug Myself” jacket. White people[males] in particular, need extensive restraint. As, obviated by this un/or castrated event. Clearly, you asked a great question. Thank You
Nothing that could pass Constitutional muster.
NOT ELCA approved !!!
Maybe if if CCW weren’t banned in churches in SC?
No longer ELCA member.
Repeal of the Community Mental Health Act of 1963 that deinstitutionalized all the crazies.
Otherwise mandatory CCW for everyone. If you want to have a society with free-range crazy people, the only possible way is for the sane people to lock themselves in cages and carry guns.
> But that is a pro-gun law. What anti-gun law would have prevented it?
He only asked for a gun law.
The best anti-gun is another gun.
No law would have prevented it. What might have prevented it is some better understanding of what could constitute behaviors that lead up to this.
The shooter’s friend hid a gun from him one time, some family member (by some accounts) gave him the gun. However it is a pretty good bet that most people he contacted over the last year had some idea that there were issues in his head.
However even IF they had called the police or mental health folks at best they would have delayed the event. Even without a gun the guy could have used 5 gallons of gasoline and done the same thing.
Unless and until the nation is ready to admit that nut jobs need to be taken seriously these acts will continue. The hell with treating them too - develop some suitable method to remove them from society.
I live where there is a state mental hospital. We are over run with people walking around talking to themselves. They are right on the knife edge of freaking out. At times these folks are scary. And there is no doubt among most sane people which of the self talkers are dangerous. Now if the general population can figure it out why can’t the professionals?
Of course, on the Left, the physical confiscation of all weapons would be the ticket.
I vote for the first proposition...
As well as members of the congregation!
Completely agree.
There is a law on the books in South Carolina that says a convicted felon or a person awaiting trial on a felony cannot own a firearm. Yet the kids father bought him the pistol.
I wouldn’t be a member of a church that restricted my right to self-protection!
