US Catholics ready to follow Pope's 'marching orders' on climate change

Leaders of the Catholic Church in America took their “marching orders” from the Pope’s encyclical on Thursday, fanning out to Congress and the White House to push for action on climate change.

The high-level meetings offered a first glimpse of a vast and highly organised effort by the leadership of America’s nearly 80 million Catholics to turn the Pope’s moral call for action into reality.

“It is our marching orders for advocacy,” Joseph Kurtz, the president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Archbishop of Louisville, said. “It really brings about a new urgency for us.”

I know dozens, even hundreds of Roman Catholics. Moral perhaps, but just as politically clueless as any other average American.

Your post illustrates one reason why I take this pope’s statements and documents with a grain of salt. You can be sure that when they write the history books about this era a couple of hundred years from now, there will be serious, credible questions about whether Francis was even the real pope.

He does not get a pass on this one.

Yes, you're right. As I said, we've known this Pope is a Socialist for some time. Anthropogenic global warming and state power go hand-in-hand. Nothing good can come from that point of view. It would be nice if St. JP2 could have a few words with him.

Caesar=Caesar....God=God...still a good admonition even for a miscast Jesuit.

Can the Pope explain why there is no Smoking Hot Spot in the upper atmosphere? Algore can't, Neil DeGrasse Tyson can't. Bill Nye can't. Maybe the Pontiff can.

No smoking hot spot

1. The greenhouse signature is missing. We have been looking and measuring for years, and cannot find it.

Each possible cause of global warming has a different pattern of where in the planet the warming occurs first and the most. The signature of an increased greenhouse effect is a hot spot about 10km up in the atmosphere over the tropics. We have been measuring the atmosphere for decades using radiosondes: weather balloons with thermometers that radio back the temperature as the balloon ascends through the atmosphere. They show no hot spot. Whatsoever.

If there is no hot spot then an increased greenhouse effect is not the cause of global warming. So we know for sure that carbon emissions are not a significant cause of the global warming. If we had found the greenhouse signature then I would be an alarmist again.

Ha! I guess you were too young to listen to Father Coughlin who is now vilified as a monster. Or Cardinal Sheen or any of the cardinals, priests and bishops who fought communism across the globe or even read my first religion class text book which had a cartoon of a Soviet teacher screaming at children “There is no God!”

Enjoy your silly books.

You need to get real, and you are absolutely nuts about the Soviet Union, America and our 150,000 dead and our untold treasure spent, and President Reagan, and my and millions of other American and NATO troops liberated Poland and protected Italy.

You attack America to pretend that Catholics in America don’t vote liberal?

Do you know how the majority of Catholics vote in America?

Do you know why it was so important for the left and the democrats to rewrite the immigration laws to important Catholics by the 10s of millions?

How do you think these latest efforts by their European leadership, will affect the voting of the Catholic denomination?

“US Catholics ready to follow Pope’s ‘marching orders’”

Our founding fathers distrusted Catholicism for just this very reason - that Americans may follow ‘marching orders’ rather than ‘law and order’.

The Nation State sprang up post Reformation for this very reason as well - the world got sophisticated enough to separate the politics from the religion.

Neither this pope nor any other will succeed in putting that genie back in the bottle.

The more this guy runs his mouth, the fewer Catholics he’ll have around to fund this nonsense in the future.

Never trust an Argentinian to do a man’s job.

If history repeats what happened in centuries past, there will be a big dust-up among Church leaders over this clueless pope, and he will be removed and replaced to avoid further conflict, just like has happened before.

I understand that, today, The National Register (IIRC) broke a story, indicating that Pope Francis has tied his advocacy of the AGW "climate change" model with the defense of "pre-born" life, on the grounds that if you weep over the fate of the biosphere, of wildlife, etc., etc., then how can you not weep over the active, routine, ongoing, deliberate destruction of pre-born human life?

If this report is true, I notice the rest of the print/online media have yet to catch up with the news.

It is off-putting to me that he advocates some kind of global organized governmental body to deal with "global issues."

This at a time when I most urgently desire the total demise of the United Nations, on grounds of its history of through-going corruption and dereliction of duty.... Take back Turtle Bay!!!

I do not have a clue what to make of this pope.... In my fancy, he may well be Nostradamus' Peter the Roman, the LAST pope. Heaven knows, I can't tell.

Is it lazy to not be “Berean”?

Has anyone even suggested searching the Scriptures to see if these teachings are true?

Ditto here. I’ll wait until a few other minor evils (like abortion) are solved. And not even then.

I see a rapidly coming day when the Catholic Church has left me...

Everyone needs to know that the Pope’s “infallibility” for Catholics does not apply to political, economic or scientific areas.

It applies to areas of moral teachings only.

The Pope may say “it is a sin to be wasteful” or “it is sinful to over consume or be wanton.” The Pope may not declare gravity doesn’t exist or the atom can’t be split.

He can be ignored if he says “we must reduce our carbon footprint.”

I have not read this encyclical yet. It may be a case of the liberal media twisting it as they see fit.

Maybe he is just speaking like the average Catholic, remember that the majority of Catholics supported Obama and support his party, which shares this view and the impulse to choose liberal politics, over voting for Christian positions.
