US Catholics ready to follow Pope's 'marching orders' on climate change
MSN news ^ | June 18, 2015 | Suzanne Goldenberg

Leaders of the Catholic Church in America took their “marching orders” from the Pope’s encyclical on Thursday, fanning out to Congress and the White House to push for action on climate change.

The high-level meetings offered a first glimpse of a vast and highly organised effort by the leadership of America’s nearly 80 million Catholics to turn the Pope’s moral call for action into reality.

“It is our marching orders for advocacy,” Joseph Kurtz, the president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Archbishop of Louisville, said. “It really brings about a new urgency for us.”

Mary’s sinlessness...
Mary’s assumption...
Mary’s ability to hear anyone’s prayer...
Mary’s ability to tell Jesus what to do...

I hardly ever try to put forth my 'understanding' of what it says.

That is totally absurd, Elsie.

If this statement were true, then what would be the point of your writing on this topic?

So what is your beef with Kurt Russell? He is just an actor; he is not necessarily portraying himself in any of the roles he has played....

In the roles he has played as an actor, if anything he has usually represented as a champion of social ORDER being destroyed by the forces of Evil (e.g., Escape from New York). This hardly makes him a champion of Evil.

Onan was not about masturbation; but failing to fulfill a REQUIREMENT.

What's the difference, Elsie? We already fully know that masturbation fulfills no requirement beyond temporary, immediate sexual pleasure — certainly it does not have any further purpose at all.

Since Global Warming is a hoax, and all the “moral” recommendations made by the Pope are predicated on the Hoax, none of those recommendations is relevant.

The encyclical contains religious language, but it teaches nothing, because its first premise is a Hoax.

You are attacking me for NOT holding YOUR preposterous notion of what kind of submission Catholics owe the Pope.

Your claim is that Catholics owe the Pope total submission whenever he opens his mouth. That is the cartoon (as in “Jack Chick”) Catholicism of the anti-Catholic propagandist. You are attacking me for NOT being the groveling Papolater of the Fundy tracts.

The encyclical lives or dies on whether the Earth is warming. The Earth has not warmed for 18 years, 6 months. Therefore, the encyclical is nothing but a propaganda tool of a secular movement. It teaches nothing that any Catholic is obliged to believe or to do. The Pope has abused his office, using it to publish and give weight to his (erroneous) personal opinions.

Do YOU really believe what MSN says?

I don’t. And many Catholics on FR don’t either.

BTW, have you read the encyclical — a letter to the Bishops?

There are good things in it for the family, against abortion, etc.

It’s the climate thing that needs repairing.

"It's straight from Il Papa his own self.. does not his infallible robed-ness speak for the whole club?"

In a word, no.

None of this encyclical is , or even claims to be,m infallible.

On the subject of his own competence to offer solutions, the encyclical says: " On many concrete questions, the Church has no reason to offer a definitive opinion; she knows that honest debate must be encouraged among experts, while respecting divergent views." (Para. 61)

Wouldn't that be refreshing!!

" In that verse (Genesis 8:22) God assures that cold and hot, summer and winter will never cease for as long as the earth endures."

I believe that, of course, but it does not prophesy, either pro or con, concerning alleged "global warming." If the earth were getting warmer, it could still have cold and hot, summer and winter. If it were getting cooler, it would still likewise have cold and hot, summer and winter.

Even during the recurrent Ice Ages, when what is now New York city was covered with a mile of ice, there was still cold and hot, summer and winter.

It says nothing about average surface temperatures or how many ppm of CO2 we would have.

Myself, I like the idea of warmer, I think it would be great if we quadrupled the CO2 as well. Up to 1600 ppm. Good for the Green.

I'm sitting here wondering what has happened to my Church. Frankly, I've been disaffected since Vatican II. My hopes were rekindled during the Papacies of JPII and BXVI. Since Francis has assumed authority, those hopes have been all but dashed.

Will I stay in the Church? Yes. There is no home for me outside the Roman Catholic Church.

Will I march in lockstep to the ukases of this Pope? No, but if he makes pronouncements ex cathedra that change core teachings of the Church, I will have to re-evaluate my stand.

Popes determine what is ex-cathedra, according to some examples. Popes do even decline to title some of their encyclicals as ex-cathedra. Moving parts are not Dogma. Science is ever changing. Approaches for resolving problems enjoy different opinions, but Dogma, Holy Scripture, previous councils do not change.

Even ex-cathedra, the encyclical will actually confirm Dogma, Sacred Scripture, the great Councils, and will be a “new” revelation. Also, the Magisterium has a role of assent. They are not potted plants. :)

Therefore, it will certainly matter who a pope brings on, in large enough numbers to sway votes among the Magisterium. God is watching all sides. God be with us and we with Him. Lord have mercy.

"I believe that, of course, but it does not prophesy, either pro or con, concerning alleged "global warming.""

With all due respect Mrs. Don-o, if you want a prophesy then consider the following. Genesis 22:17 shows that God had also promised / prophesied to Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the sand on the seashore, a promise which has arguably not even come close to being fulfilled.

So are you of the opinion that God actually needs help from man to keep his promise to Abraham?
