House approves fast-track 218-208, sending bill to Senate

The House on Thursday took the first step toward resuscitating the White House’s trade agenda by passing legislation granting President Obama fast-track authority.

The bill now goes to the Senate, where the White House and GOP leaders are seeking to strike a deal with pro-trade Democrats.

The House vote was 218-208, with 28 Democrats voting for it.

This is the second time in a week the House has voted to approve the controversial fast-track bill. On Friday, the House voted 219-211 in favor of fast-track, which would make it easier for Obama to complete a sweeping trans-Pacific trade deal.

In last week’s vote, the House GOP paired the fast-track bill with a measure known as Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) that gives aid to workers displaced by trade. Both measures needed to be approved in separate votes for the entire package to move forward.

House Democrats have historically favored TAA, but they voted against it on Friday to kill fast-track, which is deeply opposed by unions and other liberal groups.

The White House still wants both measures to reach Obama’s desk, but is now advancing a different strategy that would see the two bills move separately.

My rep is John Carney, a Dem, who voted “no” also.

We finally agreed on something.

“And the career bureaucrat supporters will come unhinged.”

So what’s the downside?

Only a downside for the party hacks, insiders, influence peddlers, and those in the ruling class who are so easily bought off and owned.

....”Because it’s interesting and entertaining....there is always the opportunity to find and connect with fellow nonvoters, and sway others to nonvoting conservatism.”....

What a lame excuse ...would you then prefer a Dictatorship?...Your silence by not voting IS consent.

I will always vote if for no other reason then ‘good men fought and died’ for the privilege of my doing so...regardless of the political atmosphere.

The only problem with Trump is tomorrow he may turn right around and endorse a super RINO like Mitts again.

Well my congressman evidently thinks he's Bob Corker's shadow. I've more than had it with Chuck Fleischmann and politicians from the Chattanooga area. I wish I could move my property line over several hundred feet and be in Jimmy Duncan's District. Now there's a Tennessee Congressman I'd like to see take LaModerate or Porkers the Pigs place in the senate. Looks like the rest of the TN GOP went with Boehner. Duncan Jr is the most consistent fiscal and Constitutional Conservative among the Tennessee Congress. Actually in the nation as well.

I'd like to see a northern county candidate run for the Third District Congressional Seat next time. Chattanooga has ruled the district since the 1800's and more conservative counties to the north stuck with being in it.

Sounds like a very good thing then, no?

Yes. My days of voting for career bureaucrats are over.

These do nothing career big gov people sit around collecting their tax paid salaries while pandering to people with speeches in Spanish.

Trump enters and announces Mexico is not our friend and he’ll get Mexico to pay for the GD wall while our people get the jobs.

The choice is clear.

“What a lame excuse ...would you then prefer a Dictatorship?...Your silence by not voting IS consent.”

We already have a one party system. And the dictatorship that you speak of would appear to already be here. All that we get to do as citizens is stand in line every few years and voice a preference for which of two kleptocrats we would prefer to hold the whip over our heads. By participating in the farce, we give it both legitimacy and our consent.

Good men fought and died for their families, their friends, and their country. They didn’t fight to preserve a rotten electoral system of bought and paid for politicians.

So who is being “lame” here? The person who participates in a farce knowing full well that it is a farce, or the person who declines to do so?

“The choice is clear.”

We’ll see. Trump is saying some interesting and provocative things, and I’m more than willing to hear him out. As for voting for him, my days of exercising the franchise are likely over. Never say never, but he’s got to convince me that he’s not only the best candidate out there, but that it makes sense to show up in the first place. That’s gonna be a tough sell.

Can I be honest?

I was considering voting for Cruz. I thought I had no choice but to vote for another career bureaucrat. He seemed OK.

That immediately changed when I heard Trump’s speech.

I was an active supporter and contributor. No kidding.

I’ve been considering the anti-voting activism for awhile. Reading, etc. I figured I’d give one more politician a chance. And I got snookered with everyone else.

Give credit where its due. I needed a nudge. I got punched in the gut instead. It worked, so thank you for that Sen. Rafael Cruz.

Trump may be the real McCoy. I’m skeptical, but willing to hear him out. Which is a helluva lot more than I’ll do for more than a handful of politicians at this point.

Otherwise, I’m going to do what I can to persuade others to be free by being free.

You stated .....All that we get to do as citizens is stand in line and ‘voice a preference’ for which of two we would prefer...... By participating we give it both legitimacy and our consent.

Well that is what voting is regardless of how you choose to define the choice or party affiliation or none...it still remains a choice.

You can always fill out a ballot and NOT choose either ...which would at the very least show your opposition to the system your opposing.

But not voting at all you’re consenting to whatever direction is taken by the winner.

The DemocRat objection to it last week and Pelosi’s pretend betrayal of Obammie-the-Commie was all Kabuki theater.

When this bill leads to more American jobs lost, the DemocRats will say, “See, we voted against it, but the Republicans forced us into it. Well, at least we ensured lots of government spending to retrain those who lost their jobs. You have us to thank for that government spending, so vote for us.”

Yes, but like the Maine senator’s vote that allowed 0bamacare to proceed [that could have stopped it],

I think you are referring to Snowe's vote in a committee solidly controlled by the Democrats to move the Baucus bill to the floor. That bill would have passed out of committee without her vote - that was not needed. That bill was never brought up on the floor for a vote - they went with another bill which she did not vote for. The Democrats held 60 seats at the time - the Republicans unanimously opposed it and voted against cloture but they didn't need a single Republican vote to move it forward with 60 seats. It was a 60-40 vote.

That is why I’m willing to keep an open mind with Trump. I liked his speech and his interview with Hannity.

we get to wait 60 days and then call or reps and beg them....wow what a great bill.

Wait ....we have been calling them for weeks now, begging and demanding they not pass this crap and they did it anyway.

50 60 600 days mean nothing. The Republican Party will not listen to the people ...only the money.

Trump needs to start a TRUMP THIRD PARTY. TTP. HE’S GOT THE MONEY HE SHOULD DO IT.
