Semi hauling 2,200 piglets crashed on U.S. 35 Monday, many ran into nearby wooded areas Between 300-400 piglets were killed in the crash About 1,500 were rounded up, taken to the Greene County Fairgrounds U.S. 35 closed for eight hours, opened at 3 a.m.
UPDATE @ 3:15 a.m. (June 9):
The Greene County Sheriffs Office says U.S. 35 reopened shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday, after being closed for about eight hours.
UPDATE @ 10:06 p.m. (June 8): The number of dead piglets has been increased to as many as 400, Xenia Twp. Fire Chief Dean Fox said.
Theres quite a few dead pigs, he told us at the scene. Fox estimates there are about 1,500 feeder pigs at the fairground, and volunteers have been able to water them down so very few are showing stress.
When he and his crew arrived on scene, the driver told them there were about 2,200 piglets in the trailer and 300 to 400 were still inside. Fox credited area farmers who brought livestock trailers to the scene because that allowed a lot of the animals to be rounded up safely, but he noted that pigs that ran off and made it into the woods might not be found.
Watch emergency response crews and volunteers round up the escaped piglets.
Probably well never get a hold of them Well try as hard as we can, but we probably wont retrieve them all. I cant say what will happen to the pigs.
If somebody finds a pig and wants to turn it in, call the local law enforcement and well try to take care of it, Fox said.
This officer and others had to chase down a couple of thousand baby pigs that were being hauled by the semi that crashed on U.S. 35 West on Monday evening, June 8, 2015. (Jim Noelker/Staff) -

Soon to be wild feral hogs.........
Just bringing the bacon home!!
Well I guess the price of bacon is going up again...................happens to gas with oil spills......................
Not good...
I doubt feral hogs will be a problem in Ohio. They won’t survive the winters.
They have survived in European winters......................
But officer, I was only bringin’ home the bacon!
That’s what I was thinking.
Nature will take its course and we’ll have a wild hog problem here, too
We have feral hogs all across The South, fro Florida to Texas and as far north as Tennessee. Most of them are descendants of escaped hogs the Spanish brought when they were searching for gold. Desoto and Ponce DeLeon brought them to use as food on their expeditions.........................
These would have already been castrated. Unless there’s already a feral pig population where this happened, these won’t be it.
What about the females?.........................
Pigs are more resilient than deer.
OOPS!...................
