Brian: Stephen Coughlin is a former army intel officer and author of the book called “Catastrophic Failure: Blindfolding America in the Face of Jihad”.
Brian: So Stephen did you feel that nailed who our enemy was and gradually were told to pull back?
Stephen: Yes that’s exactly what happened. I was brought into the Pentagon as an intelligence officer. The goal of intelligence is to define the enemy as he defines himself. It’s not my fault he defines himself as jihadi to oppose Islamic Law.
They asked me to purge that from my research and I refused so they purged me. The question becomes if you can’t analyze Al Qaeda based on what they say they are fighting for how, can you analyze them at all.
Brian: I guess the fear is that well if you say we are at war with Islam, you are fighting millions of people, let’s disseminate and say the war against radical Islam. Do you have a problem with that?
Stephen: I don’t have a problem with the idea at all. Our goal is to define the enemy. At a certain point they were just Nazi’s in Germany. When the Nazi’s took over they controlled Germany and we had to fight all of Germany. What we are seeing is that type of process cycle up.
So I don’t have to prove what true Islam is to all Muslims, I just have to prove what Islam is to the people who are fighting and they think these things.
Brian: So let’s look at the National Intelligence Report from 2004 they mention these words in this frequency chart:

Brian: Is there a danger in that?
Stephen: There is an absolute danger. You can’t target what you will not define. I think we think of the war on terror and war over there, but I think the people we are up against, feel that they can win the war over here by influencing how we conceptualize the nature of the threat. And miss – all the time. Because if I can’t use the concepts of Jihad, that Al Qaeda say they rely on, then I can’t understand what they are going to do.
Brian: The president says they bastardize Islam and use it as an excuse for their behavior. What’s the truth?
Stephen: For example, the president said Isis is not Islamic. But in December, without supporting them, Alazar the most prestigious center of Islam in the world, said they are Islamic, so if it is good enough for them, it is good enough for me.
Brian: When people read your book “Oh well, he just got fired”. What do you say?
Stephen: I never asked to do it in the first place. I was a reserve officer and successful. They brought me back in as a consultant and I was successful again.

In spite of his groundbreaking work for the Pentagon’s National Military Command Center, the National Military Joint Intelligence Center, the National Security Council’s Interagency Perception Management Threat Panel and the Joint Chiefs of Staff Intelligence Directorate, along with lectures at practically all of America’s leading national security institutions, by his own admission Coughlin’s work is no longer welcomed in much of Washington D.C.
