SENATOBIA, Mississippi
Several people who cheered for family members at a recent high school graduation ceremony are now facing charges for disturbing the peace.
Police at Northwest Mississippi Community College, where Senatobia High Schools graduation ceremony was held, said the superintendent asked the crowd not to scream and to hold their applause until the end. Linda Walker, Ursula Miller and two other people were asked to leave the ceremony because they were screaming and cheering.
When she went across the stage I just called her name out. Lakaydra. Just like that, Ursula Miller told WREG.
Miller said she was then asked to leave the graduation. A few weeks later, she was served papers.
Senatobia Municipal School District Superintendent Jay Foster filed disturbing the peace charges against the four people who were asked to leave graduation. Officers issued warrants for their arrests with a possible $500 bond.
Its crazy, Henry Walker said. The fact that I might have to bond out of jail, pay court costs, or a $500 fine for expressing my love, its ridiculous man. Its ridiculous.
Superintendent Foster declined an on-camera interview but told WREG hes determined to have order at graduation ceremonies.
I can understand they can escort me out of the graduation, but to say they are going to put me in jail for it, Miller said. What else are they allowed to do?
The four people facing charges are expected in court Monday, June 9.
Besides all the queers coming out at Graduation, we now have this.
Is it too much to ask that Graduation Ceremonies be held with dignity and decency?
OK (yawn).
Lakaydra
Means gay in Bulgarian. That’s why.
I can understand they can escort me out of the graduation, but to say they are going to put me in jail for it, Miller said. What else are they allowed to do?
Actually Mr.Miller, it would behoove you to understand
what ELSE you aren’t allowed to do.
When questioning authority leads to arrest,
you know things have gone too far.
Exuberance is fine but there is a certain type of person who in a public place has no idea how to shut their mouth or be quiet.
In the middle of a quiet movie, and certainly at a graduation.
I was just about to post that. Most formerly solemn and modest occasions I have attended lately (High School Honor Programs, band concerts, musicals, graduations, and even a college graduation) have become uncooth shout-out opportunities from rude audience members.
What happened to decorum in public events?
On the other hand, does it warrant an arrest? I think if people got over their fear of the PC police and just told the offenders to shut the hell up...
I’m torn.
Well, at least they didn’t express opposition to gay marriage or to anthropogenic global warming.
This happens at college graduations as well; screaming, hooting, blowing air horns. Nobody can hear the names of the next two or three students who walk across the stage.
I have to sit through another one this Saturday as faculty. While I understand their excitement when their relative graduates with their degree, the commotion makes me want to stand up a scream back at them to learn some manners and respect for other students and their families.
My grandson’s graduation ceremony was pretty much ruined by this kind of thing. They screamed and hollered and carried on so much that we didn’t even hear his name called. There was a request at the beginning of the event asking that all applause be kept to a minimum and no cheering until after all grads had a chance to accept their diploma’s. Someone came to the mic twice during the event to ask people to stop screaming because they were ruining the event for everyone else there but to no avail. Some people are just not fit for polite society, as my grandmother may have said.
Incrementalism. Just one more screw to turn. Become a police state one loudmouth audience member at a time.
Another “guess the demographic.” What’s the statistic- 10% of the population? And about 9% aren’t fit for civil society. I’m getting jaded in my old age.
Well, if this isn’t the road to fascism.
I tend to agree, it was a huge overreaction on the part of the school. Good thing this guy didn’t praise G-D out loud or he’d be on death row.
Mmmmm Lakaydra that right there describes the demographic! They have a problem! When I walk in a restaurant I turn around and walk out if the demographic is the same! For some reason they have to be loud and annoying in any setting.
Apparently it is. I went to a high school graduation almost ten years ago. It was disgusting. There were shouts and screams for many students apparently by family members (in one case somebody yelled “slut”).
I just spat my nice, cool beer all over my tablet.
Cheering an authoritarian state is an activity you should reserve for a socialist website.
So naturally we should then throw them in jail.
I think it’s the high speed limited access highway.
