Justice Department Studying ‘Far-Right’ Social Media Use
Free Beacon ^ | June 1, 2015 | Elizabeth Harrington

Posted on 06/01/2015 5:55:49 AM PDT by lbryce

The Department of Justice is concentrating on “far-right” groups in a new study of social media usage aimed at combatting violent extremism. The Justice Department’s National Institute of Justice (NIJ) awarded Michigan State University $585,719 for the study, which was praised by Eric Holder, the former attorney general, earlier this year. “There is currently limited knowledge of the role of technology and computer mediated communications (CMCs), such as Facebook and Twitter, in the dissemination of messages that promote extremist agendas and radicalize individuals to violence,” according to the NIJ grant. “The proposed study will address this gap through a series of qualitative and quantitative analyses of posts from various forms of CMC used by members of both the far-right and Islamic extremist movements.”

The study draws more upon right-wing forums than upon the corners of the web inhabited by Islamist extremists.

“We will collect posts made in four active forums used by members of the far-right and three from the Islamic Extremist community, as well as posts made in Facebook, LiveJournal, Twitter, YouTube, and Pastebin accounts used by members of each movement,” the grant said. “The findings will be used to document both the prevalence and variation in the ideological content of posts from members of each movement,” the grant continued. “In addition, we will assess the value of these messages in the social status of the individual posting the message and the function of radical messages in the larger on-line identity of participants in extremist communities generally.”

The project will also “identify the hidden networks of individuals who engage in extremist movements based on geographic location and ideological similarities.”

There are some concerns that NSA is running many more than one of the TOR gateways and doing traffic analysis to de-anonymize messages. See:

Of course, there will be NO investigation of left-wing extremist groups and THEIR social media use

Silly you. You should know that there is no such thing as an 'extreme' left wing.

When the left/goverment speaks of “enemies”,
they only refer to those who are an immediate threat

to their own power.

The DoJ is completely politicalized (along with the IRS, CIA, State/DoS, EPA, military aids to senators/congressmen & community organizers on the Federal payroll).

The reason that DoJ can justify this is because it represents a threat to the Left's America. Obama's people are tyrants in waiting. Obama's campaign organization will eventually find itself in the news just like Bill and Hillary foundation.

Of course they are. What do you think the hundreds (or thousands) of NSA employees were looking at... while the Russians were screaming at us about the Tsarnaev brothers?

Tell me: To a federal employee, who is more of a threat - a Tea Party member who wants less government spending and programs, or a terrorist who, if he gets away with killing US citizens, is going to INCREASE government programs, jobs, and related benefits?

This is Obama's America, FRiend, and if you think the stink of corruption in Chicago was bad, these crooks have taken over our entire country with their greed.

"National Security"? Don't make me laugh.

More like federal employee job security. You're on your own, buddy.

Nope, that won’t be included

There are no “far left” violent extremists? Somehow I doubt it. And is the alleged “violence” real violence or just critical speech that the ruling
leftists disagree with and thus want to ban, First Amendment notwithstanding?

Read the last sentence in the exerpt. It sounds a lot like a way to circumvent the elimination of the Patriot Act: government can’t monitor, compile, etc. But it can pay Universities to monitor, etc under the auspices of a study.

Hmm, no study of far-left groups? Wonder why.
Actually I know why, they target groups who they think may be a threat to the government, not the country.
The left nut groups are already controlled, funded and agitated by the government. No need or desire to shine any light there.

All the violent extremism is from left wing groups many of which were trained by DOJ.
