Senator Marries Aide a Year After Denying Affair (Thad Cochran)

Thad Cochran's camp batted down rumors last year of a romance between the senator and longtime aide Kay Webber, the New York Times reports, amid criticism that Webber had joined Cochran on 28 taxpayer-funded trips to 45 countries costing more than $150,000. Now, in a one-sentence statement, his office confirms that Cochran, 77, put a ring on it on Saturday during a private family ceremony in Gulfport, Miss., the Clarion-Ledger reports. Cochran's wife of 50 years—photographed by an anti-Cochran blogger in a nursing home last year—died in December at 73 after suffering from dementia, the Washington Post reports.

A Cochran rep says Webber, 77, who joined Cochran's staff in 1981, will stay on as an executive assistant. Supporters of Chris McDaniel, Cochran's challenger in the Republican US Senate primary, argued last year that Cochran was carrying on an affair with Webber....

This is exactly why Congress is so easily blackmailed. Just how many do not have issues that can be exploited?

My opinion is let this old man do what he wants.
So long as they are both happy. At least now, with his previous wife deceased, he can’t be said to be cheating.
I have other things to do than follow 70 y/o people around to see who they’re dating. If I live that long, I too wish to find longterm happiness of some kind.

To be fair, Thad probably didn’t know he was having an affair when he denied it. He’s that out of it.

December-December romance, 77 and 77.

I just can't get too excited over this as some kind of scandal.

Probably more companionship than hot stuff...although, ya never know nowadays.

And in all that, the maggot politician forced us to pay for an extra hotel room for his aide that was apparently not used.

Who cares-— the old priveledged goat should be enjoying both a honeymoon and a retirement. No but thy royal Nobles (err Senators) must exit the hallowed halls in the stiff, horizontal position.
The perks must be outstanding.

Senator Cochran had his mistress on the payroll. He told his constituents he didn’t but he did. He attempted to destroy opponents who were spreading the truth. He reminds me of Bill Clinton who worked to destroy Paula Jones (and so many others) when she told the truth. Bearing false witness against your neighbors is a separate violation of the rules - beyond just spending time on the dark end of the street, or abusing government travel funds.

Cochran violated an important political rule: if you do something you and your constituents know is wrong, be smart enough not to get caught.

I agree, they are both 77. His wife had been out of it for a while.

Except, the relationship began four decades ago.

It’s not a case of a couple septuagenarians finding love, it’s more a case of waiting 40 years for the wife to kick to bucket.
