As one of the city's deadliest months comes to an end, terrified residents have compared parts of Baltimore to the Wild West.
In the wake of the Freddie Gray riots, families have barricaded themselves inside their homes, too afraid to leave, while those on the streets walk around wielding guns - because there are allegedly no police around to arrest them.
Arrested are down 50percent and homicides are at their highest level in 15 years. In the Western District, there have been more murders in the first five months of this year than in all of 2014.
Neighborhoods such as West Baltimore, which had seen heavy policing because of endemic drug and gang violence in recent years, have experienced a reversal, with citizens claiming they have been virtually abandoned.
But embattled law enforcement officials claim they are 'under siege' from criminals taking advantage of the unrest, while officers complain they are met with hostility while policing certain areas.

The president of Baltimore’s police, Lt. Gene Ryan, union tells WJZ:
“The criminals are taking advantage of the situation in Baltimore since the unrest. Criminals feel empowered now. There is no respect. Police are under siege in every quarter. They are more afraid of going to jail for doing their jobs properly than they are of getting shot on duty. Right now they can go to jail for following Supreme Court decisions such as Illinois v. Wardlow. The Baltimore States Attorney’s Office essentially overturned the Supreme Court’s decision. We hope that all leadership will come together to support the police to move the community forward.”

Hey Ecliptic - naw - not attacking you personally. But we do have the luxury here in the US that people are innocent until found guilty in the court of law. They are not ‘proven’ guilty, really, they are found innocent by a judge or a jury.
Much of what we read in the newspapers or see on television is so inaccurate that we can’t rely on it. It seems the state attorney may have overcharged the cops. I don’t know.
What I do know it: we do not know the fact.
I’m not sure we’ll ever know the facts. But we ought to wait for facts to come out. Hopefully they will.

“In light of the DOJ settlement, yes, we’ve directed officers to be really thoughtful on the reasonableness and subtext of their interactions with people,” said Dana Haynes, spokesman for Mayor Charlie Hales. But Haynes has no idea if that’s a factor contributing to more gang violence, he said.”

Some Baltimore pharmacy owners wait for police response to looting

On the color video from a security camera, two masked women and two men slam a crowbar into a pharmacy safe filled with narcotics in a failed attempt to open it. A woman then smashes a cash register loaded with money. The four, with the help of others, haul what owners say is tens of thousands of dollars in drugs, computers — and an entire ATM — from the Care One on Reisterstown Road amid the rioting that followed Freddie Gray’s funeral.
A mile away at the Care One on Pennsylvania Avenue, security cameras recorded more chaos: looters carrying away a 300-pound safe filled with oxycodone, Percocet and other powerful narcotics, owners say.
Now, more than a month after the incidents on April 27, owners of those pharmacies and others in West Baltimore say police have not responded to their numerous requests to report the missing drugs. They’re frustrated that police have not reviewed footage from dozens of store security cameras or even examined a cellphone left amid the destruction — evidence.
