Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury in Chicago. The Illinois Republican, 73, is charged with trying to evade cash withdrawal requirements, and with lying to the FBI about it.

“$3.5 million? Really? I had no idea. I’m not a bad person, but I’m really bad at numbers - and my memory is terrible. $3.5 million!? Hard to believe - it was just $9,500 here and there. Boy, I really lost track.”
What’s interesting is the timing of when he resigned in Oct 2007; it was after the summer where the insurgency took a beating and was really faltering and it looked like the war was essentially going to be won; al Dhouri of the Baath insurgency began denouncing al Qaeda and was inquiring about negotiating, and the Dems were looking at gaining congress and being in position to saboutage the war in Iraq and force a loss while Bush was still president.
i[m not sure there are cash machines with that sort of ability so he would have to have interacted with people in a bank. just a minor point as one takes seconds and the other longer.
that was my original thought but after a moment or two i realized Hasert may have approached the person and asked how much to make whatever happened go away. Thats a bribe, not extortion.
Whatever he did had to be pretty embarrassing and probably quite illegal to fork over that much. Had to have been done with intent. I don’t think he paid hush money over a fender bender. Could be a pregnant intern in this.
Read the article. He wasn’t keeping it.

The Dems gained control in Jan 2007.
Or, at the very least, it proves that when all the bad news stories revolve around Democrats they can put a Republican in a bad light whenever they want. That’s really all this is.
“Obama: Last few news cycles have been hell for us. Find a Republican we can scandalize to get some of the heat off us.”
Thank you for the early morning sanity post
Ah, yes, the Sons of Paterno. Even child rape is ok, as long as we win!
Apparently the hush money is going to some guy he was associated with back in the days of when he was a HS Wrestling Coach. I am betting it was some kind of sex with young boys.
And your IRA/401K is something they will consider “theirs” as well.
Whatcha talking about “will”
We keep minimum in the el government banco.
We made “many” transactions below the $10K limit because of the stupid piece of paper.
We will continue to do it and we know they are watching us.
Hell, the government put money into my account without my authorization one time. I did not even give them the account # or routing info. They were supposed to mail me the check...... Next day withdrew that $7K too...
If they think they want their money (which is mine) they can come and try and get it or find it....bwhahahahahahahah
My guess was it has to be either a dead girl or a live boy. Since the unnamed person with which he had past misconduct seems to be alive and well enough to receive the payments, that excludes the dead girl.
More to the point, why so many on FR support that intrusion.
The has a clause about knowingly ‘structured’ withdrawals to avoid drawing federal attention.
Still I agree with you. If it is your own money...it should not be anybody’s business but your own whether it is 5,000 to 25,000.
I am sure there is a totally innocent explanation for this. Or maybe not.
That’s why the smart money is in offshore accounts. I have hated banks for years. Of course, I also hate the government.
All Hastert needs to do is change his name to Clinton and he will walk away unscathed! After all comparing the money situation the Clintons are up by a couple hundred million.
...or a cash generating business, like a car wash.
The law that allows the government to know how much you withdraw from the bank is otherwise known as the Patriot Act. Which Hastert helped to pass.
In other words, Denny Hastert just got busted breaking his OWN law. Dat’s gotta hoit!
