This is a highly flawed study. I am surprised that a tenured Professor of any credibility would allow such a study. Unless the use of the “N” word also had the race of the person using it, the study is worthless.

My experience has been that a certain thuggish subculture within the African American community uses the “n-word” more than anyone.
So it does make sense that black mortality rates would be higher where there are more “n-word”-using African Americans.

based on the volume of Google searches containing the n-word The only people I know who use the "n-word" are blacks themselves and rappers. So the study shows that black mortality is highest where people listen to rap music?

Um, yeah. Okay. Did it ever occur to these “researchers” that the word people were searching for may very well have been typed by the very people who can use the word without repercussions?

"The study gauged the levels of racism across 196 media markets based on the volume of Google searches containing the n-word in each area. Researchers qualified that not all the searches were necessarily motivated by racism, but assumed that areas with a greater concentration of these searches have higher levels of racism overall.
Totally bogus assumption. The vast majority of people using the N word online are African Americans.
To: YourAdHere
These researchers are stupid.
No one uses the N-word more than blacks.

why would anyone be surprised that being a racist is not good for one’s health?

The examination found that areas with higher frequencies of racist Google queries had a higher prevalence of Black deaths. Those findings remained the same when additional demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the areas, such as the number of Blacks, and levels of education and poverty, were taken into account. It is possible to identify the geographic location of people submitting Google queries? I did not know that.
So if we turn that around: we know that areas with a higher prevalence of Black deaths are areas with a higher Black population. And if it is within these areas that we have higher frequencies of racist Google queries what does that say about the level of racism in the population of these areas?
Somehow I don't think these researches explored that one. Or that Afro.com would publish such observations.

Makes sense. I’ve never experienced more racism than from black trash. Which is basically what the cities are.

These days, the “n-word” is almost exclusively used by black people.

By “racist locales”, they mean black neighborhoods, right?

I think we can assume these researchers at the University of Maryland avoided nearby Baltimore and DC. In every scientific field of study there is no avoiding leftist vomit ideology.

Do they mean, like Baltimore—where black/white racism is obvious and rampant?
To: YourAdHere
And how do they determine that an area is racist. The word racist is overused to the point that it has lost all meaning.
