Can racism be stopped in the third grade?
Thats the question asked in this weeks New York Magazine cover story by journalist Lisa Miller. The short answer, of course, is that it all depends on how you define racism.
At the Fieldston Lower School, a $43,000-per-year Riverdale institution, the administration sees racism everywhere. Just consider the microaggressions that have been uncovered.

So weve come full circle. Remember this from George Wallace back in 1963?
segregation now, segregation tomorrow and segregation forever-George Wallace.
Now people of color are calling for SEGREGATION! That means since 1963 the government has been overseeing a failed experiment.
Krap! When and for what reason was this new over used term “microaggressions” invented or coined?
didn’t MLK want the complete opposite of what is happening? Please tell me things are different in the conservative states. I know New York is lost but I’m probably here to stay, Lord help me.
Im guessing that some frail minded pencil necked likely homosexual geekette in the lower levels of academia coined the “term”.
This idiocy is about grouping kids in several different groups, so that they can say stuff about everyone else in the other groups, that they wouldn't say to each other, face to to face; except that it is really all about instilling those kinds of thoughts in small children, who didn't have them to begin with! And many of the parents, who are far lefty liberals, are really upset and angry about about this stupid program.
Some groups were not practicing enough aggression (hereafter known as “macro-aggression” compared to other groups. Therefore, rather than have them feel left out, they are now charged with “micro-aggression”.
Coming soon to a touchy-feely social experiment near you, the latest in Liberal idiocy....
Nano-aggression!
To be followed soon after by...
Pico-aggression!
Meanwhile, traditional aggressive groups will not be labeled with their corresponding prefixes, “Mega”, “Giga” and “Tera”.
In fact, their aggression is ignored as long as possible, then labeled as “invertible after centuries of oppression”.
So much for equal treatment...
Hey, we read the headline.
Which tells you all less than NOTHING and why your posts are idiotic!
50 years ago the whole civil rights movement was based on school integration. Now liberals are re segregating schools. MLK must be turning in his grave.
Why are you so upset about my starting this thread? It is normal to post the beginning of the article with a link to the full article. If there is another part of the article you want to quote, do so in a post.
Time was, when FReepers actually read the article header before they posted.
I’d like to ask these idiots where they would place the kids with parents of different races. There are many more today than 50 years ago.
They put them in either the group called “mixed”, or in the group named “undecided”.
If you read the article, you’d know.
I’m happier when I’m with my own kind, period — and it has nothing to do with race. Commonality can depend on a myriad factors — interests, personality, religion, income level, education, nationality, culture. It is the way of the world.
I find that those so-called “citizens of the world” who obsess with diversity have problems finding their own place. They can’t settle down anywhere; they either find fault with everyone or get bored. This segregation thing is just another attempt at control.
Please read the article; this has NOTHING at all to dxo with segregation !
This is so sad... force integration or force segregation.. the concept of pigeon holing and forced grouping of person either way because of race and because some fool in power has a master plan is stupid....
I white ..and very noticeably physically handicapped and live in black neighborhoods (Compton) and Hispanic...
I always find the commonalty in people both good and bad no matter how much I might be the odd one out...
human nature... both good and bad ...is common to all...it the common denominator....
It’s is offensive to say I can’t be friends with somebody because of their race....as it is to say I must be friends with somebody because of their race.
I’m friends with somebody because of the human being that somebody is
This private school and its sister school, ETHICAL CULTURE, have installed a stupid program, that even most of the extremely liberal, parents are against! It's all about getting kids, who are in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades to get into homogeneous groups and talk about the kids of other races and what they find "objectionable" about them, when NOTHING like that exists at either school! It is teaching bias, hatred, and fear, so that the teachers can then "teach" them to NOT be "bigots". It's STUPID, but NOT as stupid as the posts made by people who didn't read the article.
