It might feel more like late October rather than late May in the Northeast on Friday night as temperatures dip well below normal.
Frost will threaten gardens across the region on Friday night as chilly air moves in from Canada.
The coldest air will focus across the interior Northeast with some locations bottoming out in the 20s.
Homeowners who have already planted their annual flowers and vegetation should take the proper precautions to protect their plants from the potentially damaging cold.
If left out unprotected, the frost or freeze could damage or even kill vegetation that is sensitive to the cold weather.
People can take simple steps, such as covering their plants or moving them under cover, to keep them shielded from the danger the cold weather brings.
Areas near the coast shouldn't have to worry about there being a frost or freeze with temperatures forecast to bottom out in the 40s.
This includes cities along the Interstate 95 corridor from Baltimore all the way up into Boston and Portland, Maine.
This potential for a freeze is occurring later than normal across the Northeast.
In a typical year, many areas outside of the White, Green and Adirondack Mountains experience their last freeze of the season by the middle of May.
This chill is not expected to last long as temperatures gradually warm through the Memorial Day Weekend.
With Memorial Day marking the unofficial start to summer, AccuWeather Expert Long-Range Forecaster Paul Pastelok stated that this should be the last threat of a frost and freeze from Pennsylvania southward.
"If it clears out during the last weekend of May, there could be another frost across the interior of New York to northern New England," added Pastelok. "However, that frost threat does not look to be as widespread as this Saturday morning."
Dang, I just HATE this Glo-bull warming/
People here in soviet Red Hampshire who planted veggies already are whining about the possibility of losing their plants tonight. Live and learn. Idiots. Mine will be going in May 31st.
Time until the global warming hoaxsters show up to proclaim their human caused global warming models predicted this late season freeze, and that more freezes of this nature are of course the result of suv induced warming.

It’s kind of weird with the whip-lash temperature variations. Last week was summery, the past three days it’s been long jeans and heavy sweatshirts, (NE OH)
Could break a 60+ year old record for new lows. Global warming scare tactics are laughable, they need to change the term to Climate change, or stock market volotility, or something else that has a 100% chance of occurance so we can base new taxes on a certainty.
good observation!

” long jeans and heavy sweatshirts, “
Yup! Glad I haven’t planted yet!
Possible answer: smudge pots, or set out large bowls of water and cover all with a tarp.
At least the Rogers Centre is covered, to keep all the summer heat out
All our fruit trees here in central Vermont are in magnificent full bloom. This late frost happened once before, a few years ago, and there were no apples that fall. I really hope it doesn’t happen again. Not much we can do about it, though, except hope.
I'm going to gamble on planting the garden this weekend though, just the same. I have my grand kids for the weekend and we always plant grandma's garden together on Memorial Day — they are 7,6 and 3 — and they love it! So even if I end up losing them, and having to secretly replace, it will be worth it just for the fun and the spirit of keeping them excited when it starts to produce and they get to pick what they planted. Memorial Day feels early this year, risk I will have to take I guess...
This happens every year...they get a spell of warm weather, and throw caution to the wind. What’s the rush? My tomatoes went in on June 9th last year, and our harvest was awesome. Patience pays.
losing the plants, and secretly replacing them... not the kids :) HA!
That was when they had snow/sleet/ice over the Memorial Day weekend here in soviet Red Hampshire...not fun.
Some day the idiots who scammed us on global warming will be saying they cured it with their EPA rules, and we should all be grateful as we throw snowballs on July 4th.
3 weeks behind on planting. End of May first week in June is about right.
