Republican gubernatorial candidate Matt Bevin’s speech sure sounded like an acceptance speech, in spite of the slim margin of victory and the recanvass that will follow. He thanked his supporters, staff, wife and nine children as well as his running mate. He was proud to point out that he and Jenean Hampton grew up poor and said their rise to this election is what Kentucky is all about.

Even with the Rinoslime and libscumedia I have great Hope for Bevin.
The establishment was amazingly quiet in this primary, other than some nasty comments by some McConnell operatives but I did not see or sense any indication the McConnell machine was directly involved in this campaign for what would have been the likely preferred candidate, Hal Heiner.
I’m not sure how they will react. Backing the Democrat would only create a future potential strong opponent for themselves - something they may not want to risk. Moreover, they want to take the House of Representatives in 2016, something that would be much more difficult if the Democrats still sit in the governor’s mansion. There were some in the establishment actually commenting about how much more polished and organized Bevin was in this campaign, and one commentator during the election returns said Bevin would be the strongest candidate to unite the party since things got so personal between Heiner and Comer...I couldn’t agree more. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
This is a very strong slate of candidates up and down the ballot. If the party is unified the base supporters should be very excited about this race. It has been a very long time since we have had such strong and credible candidates running for each office, and youthful and diverse to boot. Victory is ours if we seize the opportunity.
I am certainly Hopeful.

Bevin was pretty good against McConnell. He was simply overwhelmed by big money and power. Knocking off a party leader isn’t easy, especially when they see you coming. It’s the law of overwhelming force and it usually works.

This is good news if true. And, based upon the 2nd part of your user name, I’m believing you. I contributed some to Bevin’s losing campaign against the poseur McConnell and I expect I’ll make some contribution to his general election campaign for governor. Kentucky deserves a conservative governor for a change.

Well, he made a lot of unforced errors...I thought his campaign was embarrassing against McConnell. This time around, he won me over, and I was very pleasantly surprised by his campaign and apparently sharpened political IQ...he handled the intense rivalry of his two other opponents beautifully - allowed them to destroy each other, stayed above the fray, and snuck right through the middle of them. Most impressive, and he earned my vote.
Yeah he was a real ace, when he pretended he went to MIT, and then when he went to a cockfighting rally, a real dynamo.
Well Wildcat, you know Kentucky. But I’m extremely worried that Comer was the only Republican who could win the general election.
I hope he wins. This sets him up as a future presidential nominee, and it also sets him up to take another shot at McDonnell. Hehehehe...
We have to get the RINOs to expend their resources at every level.
This might’ve turned out to be a better outcome. Heiner went nuclear in the race, and it harmed both him and Comer. Bevin emerges smelling like a rose (similar to the infamous GOP primary contest for Governor of South Dakota in 2002 when Mike Rounds came from a distant third to win). The other candidates apparently harbor no ill-will towards Bevin, so he has already united them in support (which would not have been the case had Comer managed a win).
He’ll have the Tea Party support and he has a Black Conservative woman as his running mate (she’ll be the first Black to win statewide in KY).
The big question is whether Mitch McConnell decides whether having another Democrat (Conway) in Frankfort is better than electing a Republican.
I don’t think that there’s any question that Mitch McConnell prefers a Republican governor over Democrat Conway (who, if he’s not defeated, could become the future U.S. Senator that he has long been expected to become) and will support Bevin if he survives the recount. I’m not buying into the “McConnell is an evil RINO” meme that has become so popular on FR over the past few years; sure, he’s not as conservative as we’d like, but he’s been claiming Democrat scalps since before Bevin was born and will do anything to stop Conway. He endorsed Rand Paul (whom he opposed in the 2010 primary) not only for reelection to the Senate, but *for president*, and will do the same for whomever wins the GOP gubernatorial nomination, including Bevin.
A better question is whether Bevin has learned from his disastrous 2014 Senate run and will run a disciplined campaign. He needs to think before showing up at events for groups he doesn’t know, forget about stupid issues such as cockfighting, come clean about his lies and résumé padding”, and hit Conway on the issues. Frankly, if his slim lead withstands the recanvassing and recount, I’m not optimistic at all at our chances of winning in November, but I honestly wish Bevin the best: better to have a résumé-padder that purports to be a conservative Republican than a Clintonesquely slick liberal Democrat that pretends to be a moderate and will oppose any conservative reforms that make it out of the legislature.
You and I will have to disagree on McConnell. What I think of him can’t be repeated on a family-friendly website.
A surprise ending to me: I had expected Bevin to lose, and I thought the election was next week instead of this past Tuesday.
