Maryland Jockey Club general manager Sal Sinatra said the owners of Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park are considering moving the second jewel of the Triple Crown to Sunday to increase interest and attendance.
The potential shift of the race to Laurel Park won't come as quickly, but is under serious consideration.
Laurel Park is on a site that is roughly twice the size of Pimlico, and the facility is in far better condition than the track known as Old Hilltop. The Stronach Group, which owns both tracks, understands that money gained from state gambling might have to go to either Pimlico or Laurel.
If that's the case, Pimlico loses.

This article leaves out some important information. Pimlico is old and rundown, and would require almost a complete rebuild.
The site of Pimlico is hemmed in within a city neighborhood, with no room to expand.
And also important to note, the neighborhood around pimlico is a bad neighborhood. Definitely not the kind of area you want to be in after the races are over for the day.

Why might a Sunday race attract more attendees than a Saturday race?
I’m not sure why they think a Sunday Preakness might attract more people than a Saturday one, but the day before, they have the Black Eyed Susan, part of teh Triple Crown for Fillies, and they think having that on a Saturday would attract more people than a Friday. People might come and make a weekend of it.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
My sisters and I attended the Preakness about 5 years ago. We don’t care a fig about horseracing, but, as native Marylanders, we thought we should attend at least once.
We were truly disappointed in how shabby the clubhouse was. There was nothing glamorous about the facilities or the people attending. What a big letdown!
I,too, talked of attending a Kentucky Derby, so my husband looked into taking a camping trip to the area. He says the cost would be outrageous, so it’s off the camping list.
Go to Cincinnati ( a city you’d like anyway) and go to Louisville by riverboat.
I’ve been to the Belmont (the year Secretariat won); the Preakness and the Derby are definitely on my list.
Perhaps Maryland could follow New York’s example in this regard. First Aqueduct was renovated and everything that took place there was moved to Belmont for a year or two, including the Wood Memorial. then Belmont closed for renovations, so all its meet, including the Belmont Stakes, was held at Aqueduct for a couple of years.
There is currently some kind of construction project (in its early stages, it appears) going on on the corner of the Laurel Park lot. Let’s follow the NY example and renovate one, then renovate the other, with the open park taking up the slack.
BTW, come to Laurel sometime. Maryland Million Day in October is Maryland’s second biggest racing day. You’ll find me there, reading my program as I head over to the paddock to watch the horses walk.

I really don’t care about horseracing, so I am afraid I won’t be heading to the Laurel race course. (Used to work in the Laurel area, BTW, before I retired.)
