This citys Spanish name recalls grassy, spring-fed meadows that nourished the first farms here and gave laborers relief from desert heat.
Now Las Vegas draws a new generation of settlers epitomized by California transplant Joe Beck: CalPERS pensioners who have made Sin City their No. 1 destination for retirement outside California.

"I got $242 in here, and $242 isn't going to break anybody."
As is Pagan EnvironMentalism infesting our GovernMental Employees through their GovernMental unions that promote hydraulic political pressure for a merger of church and state with the church being Pagan EnvironMentalism!!!
Um, the takers are taking and the givers are still giving...who is exactly the STUPID ones here???
For a long time, the California tried to tax pensions which had been earned in CA. But, finally a Federal Court told them "no dice". The pension can only be taxed by the state where the recipient is living.
Smells like One World Odor
From the article, which no one has cited as yet. “Joe Beck, a Republican,...”
Turning blue states red one pensioner at a time and feeding the local economies with funding otherwise devoted to liberal causes in California. I see a red state win-win! After all, isn’t that what they’ve been told to do in countless comments on these boards? “Flee! Flee! Talk with your feet!”
As for taking the pension money they’ve earned to return it to the state they fled? Taxation without representation anyone? Where have I heard that before? Oh yeah.
Never mind.
It should be a provision for pensioners to either live in the hell-holes they are drawing a pension from, or if they leave, they forfeit 75%.
It is really unfair that some CA superintendent draws a 300K per year pension, then moves to a low or no tax state.
Places like Detroit or Chicago therefore pick up all of the obligations, but don't get the tax receipts.
The hard-working people left get stuck holding the bag.
You mean the same ‘hard-working’ people who placed individuals in power who are then legislating all of those ‘unfair’ pension laws?? The ‘hard-working’ people who now complain about those ‘unfair’ pension laws but CONTINUE to send those same leaders(D&R) back to Sacramento every election cycle?? The ‘hard-working’ people who are not stuck holding the bag but who voluntarily pick it up....those people????
.isnt it hypocritical of them to flee?”
Liberals don’t seem to think so. They seem to be doing this a lot lately, one of the reasons red states are turning purple. No different than our politicians who pass laws that apply to me and thee but not them.
“Um, the takers are taking and the givers are still giving...who is exactly the STUPID ones here???”
LOL. Yup. You choose to live under an autocratic left wing regime that fleeces you, then you don’t get much sympathy outta me.
...ping....
This is the UNITED States, is it not? How can restrictions be placed on one’s freedom of movement therein?
First California and Illinois, then the rest of the country they’ll plunder.
When did the Supremes make that decision?
I took early retirement in the 1990’s, and our CPA warned us that we still had to pay Ca. Income taxes on our pensions and IRA’s if we lived in another state.
Thanks.
Re the highly paid Cash. Super. We know a couple who are a retired principal and teacher.
About once a month they go on a cruise or trip to an expensive country like Switzerland to visit, where they are now. Also, they seem to have a special health care package that normal retired teachers don’t have.
This couple bragged about never having to save any money like the the rest of us while employed.
When he retired as a principal, somehow, he was able to avoid pension penalties when he did so called substitute principal gigs. Some of these gigs lasted many months. Apparently the union prevented retired teachers from doing this.
I think it was in the late 1990s.
I remember talking with my boss about it in that time frame. I wasn't even aware of the CA law, but I was years from retirement and hadn't really looked into it. I am not certain it rose to the level of the Supremes. I think it was a lower Federal Court, but CA immediately gave up on taxing people who moved out of state.
Since I was free to move anywhere, we are now in Southern OR and love it. Income tax is still high, but there is no sales tax, vehicle registration is very reasonable, and real estate is probably 1/3 that of the SF Bay area, maybe 1/4.
Thanks for your reply.
Apparently enough people got through to the Supremes.
Where did you locate in S. Oregon?
