When did the Supremes make that decision?

I took early retirement in the 1990’s, and our CPA warned us that we still had to pay Ca. Income taxes on our pensions and IRA’s if we lived in another state.

I think it was in the late 1990s.

I remember talking with my boss about it in that time frame. I wasn't even aware of the CA law, but I was years from retirement and hadn't really looked into it. I am not certain it rose to the level of the Supremes. I think it was a lower Federal Court, but CA immediately gave up on taxing people who moved out of state.

Since I was free to move anywhere, we are now in Southern OR and love it. Income tax is still high, but there is no sales tax, vehicle registration is very reasonable, and real estate is probably 1/3 that of the SF Bay area, maybe 1/4.
