Among political figures that have spent time commuting with Amtrak, few talk about passenger trains more than Vice President Joe Biden – who earned the nickname “Amtrak Joe” because of his love for the rail system.

I was in the UK in early April - a one-way ticket from London to Hastings was £5, or roughly $8. No fees to change your ticket.
They do national rail correctly, if that’s your business model.

Joe Biden reminds me of an episode of “The Big Bang Theory” where Sheldon discovers a train passenger who knows as much about trains as he does. He rides the trains all the time after getting hit on the head on the job at a warehouse and now collects disability. He repeats that he was hit on the head a few times more without realizing he said it before.
Every Amtrak ticket is subsidized by about $15 in the operations area or by about $45 overall including capital and interest costs according to the CBO 2013 numbers. Of course, highways, air travel and seaports cost the taxpayers at various levels too.
