I posted too soon to another poster on another thread that no official has stated “Terrorism not involved”, or words to that effect. The price of poker just went up.

“There is a surveillance video that shows the train just prior to the crash, and several Freepers have estimated it’s speed as being between 80 and 90 mph.”

Not this FReeper, who has actually ridden trains (including Amtrak on this corridor) and stood at platforms to watch them many times in my life, being my dad is a train nut.

Looks like plain ol’ ~60mph to me.

That’s because the Germans make good stuff.

Russians don’t.

(True! Germans have always been great with engineering and quality, even if there are exceptions.)

Fat chance of a train engineer coming close to smelling like a Moslem. They are almost monolithically white guys.

Taxi cab? That’s a different story.

(Never mind just what will they do to ruin the train? Gun the engines or jam brakes? That’s the best that can be done sans bombs.)

Was suppose to upgrade to 60Hz back in the 70’s but was shelved as too costly.
Pretty hard to get agreement to spend ma$$ive amounts to upgrade something that’s working well enough.

The 25HZ system worked well for the Standard Railroad of the World (Pennsylvania RR) and Penn Central, Conrail, and Amtrak chose not to do anything about that. Mostly because it worked.

What is now the Corridor North of NYC to New Haven CT was ex-New Haven RR and ran on 11KV 25 HZ from the Cos Cob power plant. North of New Haven to Boston was non-electrified until Amtrak installed the present 25 KV 60 HZ system. I thought I remembered reading that when the Cos Cob plant was phased out, the catenary once fed from it was converted to 60HZ but I haven't been able to find that info other than a note that shows the Amtrak Hell Gate line (which would be the ex-New Haven North of Bowrey Bay) is 12kv 60hz.

Amtrak's 25 Hz traction power system

Amtrak's 60 Hz traction power system

Thus in traversing the NE Corridor from Wash DC to Boston you are running on at least three different electrical systems of 11, 12, or 25 kv and 25 or 60 hz..

Whether or not a future replacement of any of the generating capacity that the PRR installed causes an 'update' to 60 hz remains to be seen.

The PRR power sources were a bit more reliable than the New Haven's Cos Cob facility.. ;-)

Now if Conrail had chosen to repair the Poughkeepsie Bridge after the fire in the '70's the railroad scene where I live would be a lot different now. But that has nothing to do with this discussion. ;-)

You are judging it based on ‘looks’.

Others have based it on the number of cars, the length of the train, and the time it took to pass a fixed spot.

I watched the video and I find it hard to determine when it started passing the camera and when it finished, but their estimate is based on (at least) something tangible.

I think until AMTRAK releases the actual data (they know how fast it was going), we cannot be sure.

Do you have any suggestions for what might have caused the crash (assuming it was keeping to the speed limit on that section of tracks) ?

He has an attorney and allegedly will not speak to police.

In his situation, I find that normal. After all, they will be trying to blame him, absent some other obvious cause.

I don't see how he has any other choice but to lawyer up and keep quiet.

On the other hand, I have heard he made a statement to the Mayor.

Right now, rumors are flying and facts are still few and far between, so I'm taking much of the 'news' with a grain of salt.

As it turns out, the engineer is a leftist advocate of the sodomite agenda, Brandon Bostian. All the details of his deviant, sordid life are here. I still see a mozzie connection beneath the surface since his religion is not identified.

Now, multiple source claim the train was going OVER 100 MPH.

Brandon Bostian, Amtrak Engineer: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

"Brandon Bostian was the engineer of an Amtrak train that derailed Tuesday night in north Philadelphia after barreling toward a sharp turn at speeds greater than 100 miles per hour, more than double the speed limit for the area, NBC News reports."

Yes, I was basing it on looks - impression of its passing.

I’m hearing more it may really have been around 90-100. We’ll see.

As far as suggestions - poor track maintenance (leading to poor track alignment), failure of the track rail, etc. Something on the track would have to be pretty big and tough to throw it, usually. Of course, this was a curve, making a bit easier.

Yes he was. Be sure to also note that the sodomite went to a far-left, state-controlled indoctrination center, the University of Missouri in Columbia. He was also a member of the Rethink Church, a pro-muzzie outfit preaching the false gospel of social justice. In sum total, this Brandon Bostian creep is a typical 'RAT, fully supporting the usurper and the homosexual agenda.

I looked at a wide-angle film (first was in a thread here, close up to the rails complete with timing), no timing, and counted about 5 seconds for the train to pass. 7 cars at 80 ft and an engine about 60 would imply about 85 mph. Of course, this is all unscientific (film didn’t even have timer, so tried to count myself with bad film at night).

Anyway the train does seem to be going faster than I first thought. And probably over the limit for the curve.
