Comic-book movies have had a woman problem for, oh, forever. But this past week has been a particularly notable low for Marvel, which seems incapable of understanding that its superhero movies are laughably sexist. Lets take a look back at the week of the studios tone-deafness:
Marvel released the sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron last Friday to criticism over its portrayal of Scarlett Johanssons Black Widow. She was seen by many as overly domesticated and feminized and grossly underrepresented in the movies action figures, a fact noted by Avengers star Mark Ruffalo on Twitter.
"@Marvel we need more #BlackWidow merchandise for my daughters and nieces. Pretty please. - @MarkRuffalo"
Director Joss Whedon deactivated his Twitter account after the film opened, leading a chorus of angry fanboys to gin up accusations that hed been driven off by deranged feminists.
Whedon, an avowed feminist, issued a statement calling those accusations horses - - t but the anger rages on (go on, just Google Black Widow and feminists), underscoring the idea that Marvels content fosters dismissiveness or outright hatred of women.
Relatedly, two other Avengers stars, Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner, slammed Black Widow as a slut and whore during the films press junket, for which they apologized but which Renner repeated later on -SNIP-

Liberalism is a mental disorder.
I saw the first couple of Superman movies, and no more “superheroes” after that...boring and juvenile.
There’s no such thing as bad publicity here. I myself have the additional bonus of not caring one iota.
I haven’t been caring since that Joker film cost Heath Ledger his life.
The Olson Twins killed Heath Ledger, not some movie.
You must be at least 7'11" tall, weigh over 1000 lbs and have green skin....
I thought black widow was a sterilized liberal who made a joke about backing up the men who could not keep it together.
And how dare they call a WHITE woman the BLACK Widow!
Making a common mistake with sleep medication, putting it next to the bed instead of another room, killed Heath Ledger.
I think that the solution here is to bring back Wonder Woman. “In her satin tights, fighting for our rights!”
And a bad temper. Don’t forget that.
I’ve seen all the Marvel Super-Hero movies and I didn’t see one instance of women being belittled in them. As for Marvel not putting enough women out there, the rest of the planet can do that any time they like.
These movies are all escapist endeavors. The men do super-human things, and some of the women too. There are good and bad guys and good and bad women.
I hope some day I can achieve a level in life where all I want to do is trash everyone for not making me feel better about my gender or ultimately myself.
No, scratch that. I never want to, get to that level of shallowness.
Ruffalo, you don’t look like s super-dad for making this idiotic statement on behalf of your daughter. You look like the ultimate guy now in need of rediscovering your ‘man card’.
I support men to love their daughters, nurture, and respect them. I don’t support men who enable their female children to see the world as “against them”, or comic book developers as “enemies of the female gender”.
Good grief fella. Man up. Do it for that daughter that needs to respect you more than some dumb ass comic book hero.
You are aware I hope that when Marvel originally developed the super hero comic books the target audience was 9 to 18 year old males right?
Mark Ruffalo, on the other hand...
.................a Woman.................
......THAT CAN SHUT UP......
Mega-dittos dude.
She exhibits bad taste in picking men.
But then she hasn’t met me yet.
lol
Exactly! We need more equal opportunity superheroes, possibly best exemplified effeminated Obama.
The new person doesn’t need any special super ability or “do any of the superhero” stuff, just by showing up. It will cause the bad guys to self-hate and self-ashamed themselves.
(super heavy dose of sarc)
