Navy Capt. John Banigan is no longer aboard the San Diego-based guided missile cruiser Lake Erie.
Neither is a goat named Master Chief Charlie.
Banigan was ousted from command last week after the brass lost confidence in his ability to lead, the standard explanation when a commanding officer is removed.
Banigan has been reassigned to a desk job. Master Chief Charlie is also ashore, though it remains unclear whether he is on Navy property or civilian property. He is, however, in excellent health, the Navy said.
The fate of the captain and the goat became mixed when the Navy began an investigation into the command climate aboard the Lake Erie, which was reassigned to San Diego from Hawaii in September.
According to Navy Times, one of the things that investigators found was that Banigan allowed Master Chief Charlie to make the trip from Hawaii to San Diego.
Banigan may have failed to comply with the rules of the California Department of Food and Agriculture that require anyone bringing farm animals into the state to have them checked out by a veterinarian.
The exact reason for Banigan's removal as the ship's skipper remain unclear. The Navy declines to comment.

Ewe.
lol,,, cracked me up when I saw that
I forgot that that bear came from Canada. Did it also live under the “Sanders”?
I watched that. The guy deserved to be relieved. Back then covering for a command guy who wasn’t fit for it was thought to be the right, virtuous thing to do. If the navy really wanted to help him they would have relieved him for medical reasons and gotten him some help, to get his head right if possible, and back into command somewhere else.
What’s wrong with Master Chief Charlie staying in the Goat Locker?
Now THAT’s funny. Well played sir.
Not sure. I only knew of Winnipeg the bear from little 30 second adverts that the government of Canada runs. The Winnie the bear ads ran 15-20 years ago, I believe.
I’d guess that, even on FR, 90% of people didn’t see any humor. I’m pleased (and relieved) that someone smiled.
Shouldn’t that be a burka?

DANG!
are you sure it wasn't just a fat ugly woman?
It was definitely a four legged pig. Young maybe 30 pounds. It was night time and our boat officer {officer onboard was required for boats night operations} dealt with the Pilot and his date for that evening LOL.
Justice is stern.
Sounds like the plot of out a 1961 movie called “All Hands On Deck” with Pat Boone and Buddy Hackett. Except in place of a goat it was a turkey on a navy ship.
Life imitating art I guess.
