Minnesota felons should finish full sentences before being allowed to vote
Duluth News Tribune ^ | 5-3-15 | Andrew Cilek

There is a good reason liberal lawmakers and governors across the country are eager to pass laws allowing felons to vote. A recent study conducted by the Academy of Political and Social Sciences indicates that seven out of 10 convicts register as Democrats. The DFL-controlled Senate in Minnesota is leading the way with its recent passage of a bill allowing felons to vote while still on parole or probation.

Proponents of changing the law are focused almost entirely on what they view as good for the felon rather than being concerned with the rights of law-abiding citizens. Proponents claim that allowing newly released criminals to vote would keep them on the straight and narrow. If voting is such a strong motivator for felons, then the current system that rewards them after they have shown the ability to abide by the law is the proper policy. Felons are proud of having earned back their right to vote. Proponents are trying to sell this idea to the citizens of Minnesota under the guise of being simply a “second chance” for felons. But felons already get a second chance in Minnesota when their right to vote is restored after they complete their sentences — unlike in Florida, Iowa, Kentucky and Virginia, where they are prohibited from voting for life.

seven out of 10 convicts register as Democrats.

The other three are on the ballot!

It should be “complete the original term of their sentence”. No good time, or early release time counted.

If they are going to be punished for life, then they need a dirt nap. Not let out.

Punish, or don't.

Don't give a life sentence without having the option of a dirt nap.

“There is a good reason liberal lawmakers and governors across the country are eager to pass laws allowing felons to vote.”

Should read ....

There is a good reason liberal lawmakers and governors (AND RAND PAUL) across the country are eager to pass laws allowing felons to vote.

Rand is so dense.

So many say that felons should be able to vote after serving their sentence.

Part of their sentence is losing their right to vote. What part of that can they not comprehend?

Felons shouldn’t vote at all.

Quite. If they want to vote, we’ll add 5 years to every sentence across the board and then we’ll consider it.

Some people don't think every felony sentence should be for life.

What part of a life sentence for a non-violent offender do you not get?

I am working to change that.

If a felon needs a life sentence, he needs a death penalty.

If current trend lines persist, within about ten years they'll have polling stations inside the prisons.

I don’t think Rand or his old dad are “dense.” They have convinced hundreds of thousands of supporters to give them millions of dollars for doing nothing but making speeches. Sweet.

The left is always looking for ways to expand the “rights” of anyone who might bring them votes, no matter how little a contributor to society they may be, while steadily curtailing the freedom of the rest of us.

If a person has served their debt to society, they should have all of their rights restored, including gun rights.

Or, face it that it's a life sentence and give them a dirt nap.

One or the other. Not the BS we have today.

I’d say if the ‘dead’ were allowed voting in elections, then felons should be able to, at least they are ‘alive’....

If someone commits a felony, there should be severe consequences.

If someone doesn’t like losing their right to vote, they shouldn’t commit a felony.

"Paying one's debt to society" is a phrase used to describe sitting in jail doing nothing. It's hard to see how it pays any debt. In fact, it's more like the opposite, since it costs society quite a bit to keep a felon incarcerated.

If they have paid their debt to society, it should be over, not drug out for the rest of their life.

That is a life sentence. And it needs to be reflected appropriately.

So, commit a felony that requires a life sentence, add the death penalty to it, because under your scheme, the punishment is NEVER over.

We call that a life sentence.

And don't get me wrong. I think some activities deserve the death penalty and a life-time of punishment. Things like molestation or armed robbery.

They need dirt naps. In a perfect world, while the crime is being committed.
