Jeb Bush is getting torched in Iowa

It doesn't look as if former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush's (R) path to the White House will run through Iowa.

Bush, widely viewed as a presidential front-runner on the Republican side, scored just 5% in the first primary state in a new Quinnipiac University poll out Wednesday.

The survey found Bush in seventh place among likely caucus goers — behind Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida), Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R), and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

Walker, with 21%, was by far the leader in the poll. Rubio and Paul tied for second place with 13% apiece. "The first few months of the Iowa Republican caucus race show Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker as the early leader," Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac poll, said in a statement. "US Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, on the strength of an impressive candidacy rollout, has moved from the bottom of the pack into a tie for second."

Brown attributed Bush's low standing in the poll in part to Iowa voters who view Bush as insufficiently conservative. "More of those surveyed view Bush unfavorably than favorably, compared to Walker's 5-1 positive ratio," Brown said. "And 45% say Bush is not conservative enough. It's among the GOP conservative base that Bush finds himself trailing Sen. Ted Cruz, former Gov. Mike Huckabee and Sen. Rand Paul."

Iowa, however, may not be crucial to Bush's prospects in 2016. Though the state votes first in the presidential primary, it has a mixed track record of supporting the candidate who ultimately becomes the nominee. In 2012, Iowa backed former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pennsylvania), and in 2008, it backed Huckabee; neither won the nomination.

I'm having a hard time believing that Ted Cruz's Iowa poll numbers are as low as being reported by the media.

We know this. But when has the media ever shrugged off the importance of Iowa, and why are they doing so now?

The reports I’m seening here on fr show that cruz is getting big support among the party activists—that is the people who will run his ground game in iowa.

it looks like bush will likely ignore places like iowa and south carolina where cruz is doing well among party activists. rather bush will go for the big vote primary states where his money could make the difference among turkey republicans.

Some good news for a change.

I guess Cruz is in 4th, since there's no mention of fourth place.

Walker, with 21%, was by far the leader in the poll. Rubio and Paul tied for second place with 13% apiece.

It looks like Cruz and Huck are tied for fourth, with 11%:
Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ted Cruz of Texas, Marco Rubio of Florida, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee are tightly packed for second place, each earned between 13% and 11% support.
There's a reason why Rove was at Huck's rally in Hope. Huck's a straw to split the Evangelical vote.

Why is it that all I hear from the MSM is that Jeb Bush is the most favored by the GOP?

In 2006 the top three states for farm subsidies were Texas, Iowa and Illinois.

I believe that until March 15, primaries have to have proportional representation if they choose delegates. Starting on March 15 with Florida, Illinois and Missouri, primaries can be winner-take-all. Bush is gambling on the winner-take-all primaries, so he needs plenty of lost-causers in the race at least until March 15.

Candidate that FR go gaga over never win the nomination. FR loved Alan Keyes. Adored Duncan Hunter. Fell all over Fred Thompson and Herman Cain. Hated McCain and Romney.

I would go so far as to say it's a good counter indicator. And it points to Cruz not being the eventual nominee, sadly.

I'm going to wait for Dick Morris's supportive prediction to confirm that.

Very good reasoning.

I usually tell people that McCain 2008 and Romney 2012 were the Republican answer to Al Gore 2000 and John Kerry 2004. All four were toothless centrists.

Iowa does not matter to anyone except the MSM.

It is not important. Just a wide spot in the road.

The MSM loves the Ad dollars they generate. That’s it folks!

The other FR "endorsed" candidates you named could not hold a candle to Ted Cruz. Alan Keyes was/is an idiot. Duncan Hunter didn't have a clue as to how to run a campaign. As far as Fred Thompson the closest he came to having "fire in the belly" was a bad case of heartburn.... what a freakin' dud. Herman Cain was a womanizing whore monger who did not have the balls to stand up to his accusers, but rather ran and hid behind his wife and God. He was guilty as hell of the charges leveled against him; otherwise he'd have stood up and said: "I'm not running from this. I demand to face my accusers on national TV." Nah; Cain dude was a creep.
Ted Cruz is head and shoulders above that crowd.

I agree with your assessments on everyone, including Cruz.

Maybe he can beat the Free Republic curse.
