WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama plans to nominate Marine Commandant Gen. Joe Dunford as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation’s most senior military post, according to a senior administration official.

Dunford would succeed Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, who is retiring this year as the top military advisor to the president and defense secretary.

Officials said Air Force Gen. Paul Selva will be nominated to become the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the senior administration official said.

It looks like the Legion of Merit, but I did not know that medal had a V device.

According to Wiki:

"The sea services (i.e., the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard) may also authorize the Combat "V" for wear on the Legion of Merit, while the Army and Air Force do not authorize the "V" device."

The Marines don’t go nearly as crazy with the awards as the other services, and most only wear ribbons on the right, in blues, when there isn’t a corresponding medal.

If you look at the photos of all the recent Commandants of the Marine Corps in greens, none of them have ribbons on the right.

Thank you - I wondered because my grandson - was 173rd in the ‘Ghan - has some - they’re for Meritorious Unit Awards and Presidential Unit Citations with oak leafs...

I believe the Marines do have the Meritorious Unit Commendation - they must have the Presidential ribbon also?

They wear theirs embedded in the ribbon rack - example, General D has the Presidential Unit Citation and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award (the one in the second row with the gold frame).

Congrats on your grandson. I just retired with 33 years combined service is the USMC and Army National Guard.
