Today is May Day. Since 2007, I have defended the idea of using this date as an international Victims of Communism Day. I outlined the rationale for this proposal (which is not my original idea) in my very first post on the subject:
May Day began as a holiday for socialists and labor union activists, not just communists. But over time, the date was taken over by the Soviet Union and other communist regimes and used as a propaganda tool to prop up their regimes. I suggest that we instead use it as a day to commemorate those regimes millions of victims. The authoritative Black Book of Communism estimates the total at 80 to 100 million dead, greater than that caused by all other twentieth century tyrannies combined. We appropriately have a Holocaust Memorial Day. It is equally appropriate to commemorate the victims of the twentieth centurys other great totalitarian tyranny. And May Day is the most fitting day to do so .
The main alternative to May 1 is November 7, the anniversary of the communist coup in Russia. However, choosing that date might be interpreted as focusing exclusively on the Soviet Union, while ignoring the equally horrendous communist mass murders in China, Cambodia, and elsewhere. So May 1 is the best choice.

I agree with teh Washington Post on this, and I hope the next president will do it, as this one doesn’t care about the victims of Communism — he is a Communist.
Was that while their staff were all out marching in the MayDay parade with their red flags??
How many humans were killed by Communist policies in the 20th Century? I’m guessing 100 million people.
Let the greenies, civil rights rabble rousers & anarchists defend the record of their preferred political ideology.
Tens of millions starved, murdered & executed.
If Obama and his pals get their federal police force we’ll soon have our own chapter in that book.
"Earth Day" as celebrated April 22 coincides with the birthday of Lenin.
Communist "May Day" celebrations coincide with the birth of Adam Weishaupt's "Illuminati" May 1, 1776.
See a pattern? Celebrate May 1 as "Victims of Communism Day?" What a perfect pattern reversal that would be!
FReegards!
I want my reparations...and I want ‘em now!
Yep, that one just kinda slid down the ol’ memory hole didn’t it.
The Black Book of Communism lays out the death toll in excrutiating detail. You should really get a copy.
It’s authored by a group of French Socialists who were given access to the old Soviet Archives during the Yeltsin era. What they found is damning. Not just of the various Communist countries but also various left wing movements in the West that really did act as the Communists agents.
I found my copy secreted away behind other books in a Borders. The walk up kiosk said there were three copies in the store but I couldn’t find them. One of the clerks told me the system was wrong. I kept looking until I noticed that a bunch of paperbacks in the section were pushed out pretty far on the shelf. I pulled them out and sure enough, the three “missing” copies were hidden behind them.
Correctly shelving the two other copies I took mine to the checkout and got a very nasty glare from the clerk. Went back a couple days later and, sure enough, the other two copies were hidden away in the same location again.
Thanks. I posted a link to the Amazon offering on my FB page in honor of May Day.
DO YOU FREAKING THINK! No other ideology in the vast human history of mankind has claimed more lives then communism. If you are intent on killing someone you disagree with, become a communist / socialist. It then becomes your duty.
Peace to all people of good will.
