Why would Viet Nam attack China?I think "counter-attack" is the appropriate word. A more interesting question is "Why would the Russians sell those missiles to Vietnam?"
Also, unless the missiles are nuclear tipped (shudder), they won't make much difference.

Vietnam was attacked (and possibly conquered, I can’t remember) by the Chinese centuries ago and have hated them ever since.

Why would Viet Nam attack China? They are old antagonists. Their most recent conflict over some border territory (1979) is also referred to as the Third Sino-Vietnamese War.
