School calls the movie's cancellation a "teachable moment".
Less than a week after former NFL star and University of Maryland alumnus Boomer Esiason threatened to cut off his support for the school over the cancelation of screenings of the film American Sniper on campus, the school confirmed a new screening of the movie has been scheduled.
Boomer wasnt the only one upset with the cancelation. University of Marylands president, Wallace Loh, talked about some of the backlash the school faced in a letter to students ...
That cancellation drew controversy. We were deluged by phone calls and messages from across the country, almost unanimously outraged by the cancellation or postponement, said Maryland President Wallace D. Loh in a letter to students. Members of our faculty, staff, students and alumni, as well as members of our states legislature, voiced their dismay with UMDs abridgment of this constitutional right.
Perhaps most disheartening, MSAs Facebook page was filled with some of the most venomous, racist, and hateful messages imaginable
...
Loh said the university is dedicated to discussing all ideas and not suppressing them.

Fabulous and Thank You, Boomer!
I wanna know why they are showing commercial movies of any kind on campus. Go to a theater.
I want to sarcastically say gee that's too bad. But I’ve been in a blind rage about the riots the past few days and it doesn't do any good. We should be the bigger side and argue with reason, not hate. I think. Lol. I’m no philosopher
Oh God, the triggering from a rich, white, male, athlete who threatened to pull money from the school will cause a lot of “safe space” and “trigger alerts” all over that campus.
Muslim heads are exploding. The school was supposed to bend to their will, like usual.
That is how the student bodies are being taught. Hate America and learn to goose step to the communist agenda/
How dare these people oppose the will of muslim/liberal students? Are they not aware that students decide and not faculty?
Look, these students feel. Bottom line. And thats the only thing of import. Hopefully we will see apologies from all the racist bigots who oppressed these fragile snowflakes.
Thanks and congrats to Boomer, but this is a hollow victory: “American Sniper” will be the last pro-American movie ever selected to be shown at U-MD; the administration has made their desires perfectly well understood.
“filled with some of the most venomous, racist, and hateful messages imaginable”
See? We’re not all bad.
;-D
He hasn’t seen Atheist-support groups on FB.
This is a backhanded comment as if he begrudges acquiescing, don’t you think?
Yeah, I don’t really get it.
If it is an old movie, I can understand. But I guess they are like video rentals/HBO/Roku - get rights ASAP and show it any way else.
None of the many liberal, politically correct administrators who run the University were willing to stand up for the right to free speech.
Here’s the administration making perfectly clear that the problem isn’t that SEE canceled the showing, but that SEE fouled up by selecting the movie in the first place.
“MSA members were right to speak up for what they believe in. They deserve our admiration, not the scorn and vitriol they got on Facebook.”
They were right to demand the cancellation of the film?
“SEE, already busily preparing for an upcoming major concert, elected to reschedule the screening until next fall in order to properly plan a post-film panel discussion. Media sources then reported that UMD “cancelled” the movie. That UMD failed to uphold the basic right of freedom of expression. That UMD caved-in to a small number of students. “
See? It’s all the fault of the media. The UMD didn’t actually fail to uphold liberty; media sources merely falsely reported that they did. SEE acted *properly* in refusing to show the movie until it could be presented with a post-film panel to smear it.
“...Today, two student groups, the College Republicans and College Democrats, announced they will be screening the film next Monday, May 4, at 6 pm, in the Hoff Theater. It will be followed by a panel discussion of the themes and issues raised by the film...”
So SEE still isn’t showing it. The College Republicans foolishly allowed the college to save face, but it’s still at an awkward time (Supper time on a Monday), with a chance for people to smear it afterwards.
“Perhaps most disheartening, MSA’s Facebook page was filled with some of the most venomous, racist, and hateful messages imaginable.”
Really? Where’s the evidence?
“I take tremendous pride in the conduct of our students.” You wouldn’t say that if those messages were real.
Great News! And a BIG thank you to Boomer Esiason
“Perhaps most disheartening, MSAs Facebook page was filled with some of the most venomous, racist, and hateful messages imaginable”
Just leftist freak Democrats trying to support an intolerant institution of higher “learning”.
Money talks, BS walks. The administrators are spineless cowards, who blow one way and the other to the latest pressures. No principles whatsoever.
God bless Boomer!

Agreed.
