LGBT activists are urging a boycott of two openly gay New York hoteliers who hosted a controversial campaign event for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
The Boycott Fire Island Pines Establishments & Out NYC Hotel page on Facebook, which had amassed nearly 4,000 likes by Friday, questions the conservative company that OutNYC owners Mati Weiderpass and Ian Reisner chose to keep. The page quotes a critical profile of Cruz written by the Human Rights Campaign.
Weiderpass, the co-owner of the Hells Kitchen hotel, enraged LGBT activists when he posed for a photo with the Republican presidential hopeful during the Monday affair.
Cruz has been criticized by the Human Rights Campaign and other organziations for his consistent opposition to LGBT equality with regards to marriage and discrimination protections.
To suddenly think that the owners of a portion of the Fire Island Pines commercial space support anti-LGBT politicians is beyond comprehension, one of the organizers behind the page, who wouldn't provide his or her name, told the Daily News in an emailed statement. The thought of one dollar spent at their bars and hotels making its way into the campaign coffers of anti-LGBT elected officials is outrageous.
The fireside chat of sorts brought together only a dozen or so people including Cruzs wife Heidi, at Weiderpass and Ian Reisners Central Park South penthouse to discuss foreign policy, the New York Times reported.
The penthouse is where Sean Verdi, a 23-year-old Bay Ridge resident, died of a suspected drug overdose last October after he was found unconcious in a bathtub.
The conversation on Monday, however, steered toward gay rights, which is when Cruz played up a starkly different opinion from his typical opposition to homosexuality.
He said he would still love his daughters, ages 4 and 7, if either ever came out as gay.
We would love her with all our hearts. We love our daughters unconditionally, Cruz said, addressing this weeks event in a statement Friday.
Both Reisner and Weiderpass said they are strong supporters of the gay rights movement and Mondays chat was a chance to a candid conversation with Cruz to sway his opinion.
My tireless support of the gay community and its causes worldwide has not and will not change; on the contrary I reaffirm my commitment to gay rights by not shying away from engaging with anyone opposed to us, Reisner said in a statement.
"I was given the opportunity to have a candid conversation with Senator Ted Cruz on why he should rethink his view on gay marriage," he added. "We also spoke about where he stood on issues including the state of Israel and national security, which are the only places where we share common ground."
Reisner said he disagrees with Cruzs views and is actually a supporter of Hillary Clinton.
He hosted an event for Clinton's campaign three months back, before she announced her running. The event at Out NYC brought in at least 900 people.
Cruz added that his position on marriage equality has not changed. He, like Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, believes such decisions should be left to the states and not up to the Supreme Court.
On the subject of marriage, when asked, I stated directly and unambiguously what everyone in the room already knew, that I oppose gay marriage and I support traditional marriage, Cruz stated.
The Republican presidential candidate also submitted two bills this week that would shield states that refuse to hand out marriage licenses to same-sex couples regardless of how the Supreme Court rules in June, according to Bloomberg. The court is scheduled to hear oral arguments Tuesday about efforts by MIchigan, Tennessee, Ohio and Kentucky to ban same-sex marriages.
Cruz' shielding bill would establish a constitutional amendment and another would prohibit federal judges from making rulings on the matter until the amendment is adopted.
If I needed a new tagline..”Don’t step one inch out of line or we’ll “tolerant” all over you!” would be it!
Thank you!
Cruz what a man! Is willing to enter the Belly of the Beast and does not fear it.
He has deftly got them smacking each other around. lol.
Communism in open daylight and no one appears to se it. Gaystapo!
I’m sick of these homosexuals who think everyone has to go with their thoughts.
They’re acting like true NAZIS and it’s about time our side and the GOP as well as churches etc start speaking up about their intolerance, bigotry, and hatred.
> Reisner said he disagrees with Cruzs views and is actually a supporter of Hillary Clinton.
Says all I need to know about Reisner....whoever he is...
Then there’s the possibility that non-militant ‘normalish’ queers are sick of being Gaystapoed around by the Pink Mafia.
They know 98% of their customers are straight and are sick to death of this fake ‘equality’ fight.
Never forget, the founder of the Human Rights Campaign is being charged with homosexual pedohilia...
I think they have one hotel that caters to gays, that one could take it in the shorts, so to speak
IN-Tolerant lefties and perverts being exposed.
Suppose they have a FundMe page?
True but what gets me is how these homosexuals define themselves sorely based on what they like in sex and because of that they think they have the right to tell others what to think, what to do , and what we should accept.
I’m just sick of these people.
Did not know that either, thank you for that information.
I’ve argued too that if a man touches a boy then he is a homosexual and therefore homosexuals are responsible for most child molestations on boys.
Nikita S. Khrushchev had a better understanding of the American people than did either Dwight Eisenhower or Richard M. Nixon.
I don’t quite get why Cruz said yes to this event. I thought it was a fundraiser but it seems there were only a dozen people there, and one of them stated he was a Hillary supporter. Was this just a chance for Cruz to fly his “tolerant” flag? I hope it hasn’t backfired.
