Russia's Defense Ministry on Tuesday published the first official photo of the country's much awaited new T-14 Armata battle tank.
Ten Armata tanks are set to take part in Moscow's Red Square Parade on May 9, according to details published alongside a photo of the tank in an interactive section dedicated to Victory Day on the ministry's website.
The Armata is part of a massive rearmament program costing hundreds of billions of dollars that aims to restore some of the military might that Russia lost after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Photos claiming to show the weapon were leaked on the Internet in late March, when tanks covered in tarps and resting on a train carriage were spotted in Alabino outside Moscow.
The tanks were reportedly rehearsing their movements for this year's Victory Day Parade, when Russia celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.
The ministry's newly launched interactive portal specifies the lineup for each Victory Day parade planned for 26 cities across Russia — including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Vladivostok and Crimea's Sevastopol.

The Russian inscription on the photo says the Armata has an improved auto-loader.

A tank of the "Armata" family is intended to be used an MBT of the Russian ground forces, has radically new tactical-technical specifications and an improved auto-loader.
looka a bit like the Israeli merkava to me..not sure why (except the turret)
that turret is very high...going by the body height of the tanker guy, lets assume his torso is 3 feet, its a lot higher than that...also the big barrel thing at the back of the turret..hardly fuel is it...?? if it is good luck with that russia...

Democraps need props and gadgetry to get their point across.
Thus, overall, a more modern, better armed, better armored and more expensive alternative to the current Russian tanks, and a much better tank than anything Russia has. With the right crew and tactics it would definitely be formidable in the field.
But that only answers one part of your question. The second is if it is better than the Abrams?
Simple answer - no, it is not.
The Abrams is a superlative tank, and not just because the latest version has some of the best armor available, best weapons available, best systems available, but also because the crews and tactics used as simply the best. It is never a one-to-one fight, but rather a battle-space that provides the Abrams crew with highly networked fighting capabilities that include working together with other tanks, as well as other fighting vehicles (e.g. before the M1s get near there is a high likelyhood that aircraft have already given the enemy tanks a heavy butcher's bill), and the information awareness is almost absolute. It is never ever a fair fight, and beating an American tank formation would be currently next to impossible (maybe if it is a full war with a near-peer adversary and tactical nukes are used, but I simply do not see it happening in a limited conventional war).
There are some tanks that claim better armor (e.g. the British Challenger 2), or better technology (the French Leclerc claims a better fire control, and the S.Korean K2 Black Panther clone of the Abrams claims developed soft-kill ability), others have interesting aspects that the M1 doesn't have (e.g. the Israeli Merkava IV also doubles as an armored personnel carrier), and, finally, one plain claims to be a better tank overall (the latest iteration of the German Leopard 2). However, while one-on-one some of these claims MAY be true, the fact is that in a real battlefield with groups of tanks meeting up and things getting hot, none of them would have much chance against a full-on force of US Army M1A2s.
Which says something about the T-14 vs M1 comparison. The M1 wins.

Looks to have the same type of sloped Shaped Charge defeating armored turret as our Abrams MBT.
The T-34 was the best Soviet battle tank ever built. It outclassed anything the Germans built.
Russian tanks tend to be overbuilt and they’re robust and reliable.
Looks like this new tank is slated to replace the Soviet-era T-72 when it enters service.
Its the first Russian-built tank since the fall of the Soviet Union.

I was fortunate enough to find it’s eery twin, Chevette, for about 450 hours worth of pay, vintage Carter. One late night in a snowstorm the muffler started flying out of formation. No tools, had to manually remove it the rest of the way, since it was Fred Flintstoning on the roadway. Stored it in the ditch for posterity and roared on. Got quite good at jumpstarting. Oddest incident: hit by a bouncing golf ball hoisted aloft by a man with a bad hook. Seemed like minutes of me peering at the tiny ball bouncing high in the air, thinking, no way is that going to hit me, trying to judge it and either slow down or speed up. I was not that talented. Wham into the windshield. Of course I laid down across the shifter and passenger seat just during the impact, so I didn’t get any glass fragments in my eye, and just rolled into the golf course parking lot. Found Mr. Hook at the tee and got him to pay me for the windshield directly. I think it was a little less than $200. IMHO, should be part of every driving course: how to safely navigate things flying at your vehicle, and how to bubblegum and baling wire your vehicle to make it home. I had forgotten about those events. Certainly the Lord does preserve us before his Holy Spirit converts us to Christ.

The Russian T-34 changed the tide in World War II against the Germans. It was hard hitting, mobile, effective, accurate, and deadly to the Panzers. The German Panzer Generals said they had "nothing like it." Even the late war King Tiger didn't have many of its aspects.
Meanwhile, we have been gutting our military for 6 years now.
However, the Russians and Chinese have been increasing their military budgets by double digits.
The obese, entitled, lazy, Obama voting American public is in for one hell of a wake up call should real war come.
