Ben Affleck asked the producers of PBS’ Finding Your Roots television show to edit out details of an ancestor who owned slaves, according to a Sony internal email exchange leaked this week.
In an email sent to Sony CEO Michael Lynton shortly before the show’s second season premiere, Harvard professor and Finding Your Roots host Henry Louis Gates Jr. wrote that an unnamed “megastar” had asked producers to “edit out something about one of his ancestors – the fact that he owned slaves.”

My ancestors owned slaves (in Massachusetts) and records show that they willed them to their children (sometimes one “Negro man” to more than one child) and also willed resources “for the maintenance of his Negro man”.

It turned out that her ancestors were tories and had to flee to Canada. They were given land by the government because of their loyalty to the crown.

Virtually everyone in America has slave-holding ancestors.
That includes black Americans.

Since Massachusetts was one of the first states to abolish slavery, it’s easy to forget that there were slaves in Massachusetts at one time. (The most famous of them may be the poet Phillis Wheatley.) In addition, the slaves had to sit in a segregated section of the stadium when they attended Patriots games.
Before the Civil War anyone with a farm had a slave or two who today would actually be considered farm help. I have a g-g-g-g-uncle who owned three black slaves. Even Native Americans had black slaves. Ben really ought to read a little more good history.

Virtually everyone in America has slave-holding ancestors.
That includes black Americans.
That’s a fact that should be realized. What’s also important is that this is generations in the past, it’s not like a person owns slaves now. Do people really want to get irrational enough to blame someone for what happened to their however many greats grandparents? Get a life, and move on.
Blacks were usually enslaved by other blacks in Africa before being sent across the ocean.
