The US military command that scans North America's skies for enemy missiles and aircraft plans to move its communications gear to a Cold War-era mountain bunker, officers said.
The shift to the Cheyenne Mountain base in Colorado is designed to safeguard the command's sensitive sensors and servers from a potential electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack, military officers said.
The Pentagon last week announced a $700 million contract with Raytheon Corporation to oversee the work for North American Aerospace Command (NORAD) and US Northern Command.
Admiral William Gortney, head of NORAD and Northern Command, said that "because of the very nature of the way that Cheyenne Mountain's built, it's EMP-hardened."
"And so, there's a lot of movement to put capability into Cheyenne Mountain and to be able to communicate in there," Gortney told reporters.
"My primary concern was... are we going to have the space inside the mountain for everybody who wants to move in there, and I'm not at liberty to discuss who's moving in there," he said

Lots of chatter in the last few months about the military moving some things back underground, that they had moved to other sites in the 1990's/2000's.
This is the first confirmation of it I have seen.

the way the mountain was built? most mountains appear to be emp hardened naturally unless there were, um, construction defects..

If Ebola doesn’t get us, or mad cow, it will be the EMPs!

Comrade dictator obama probably worked out a secret deal with Putin to allow Russia to base their nuclear weapons within United States territory. That will save them a lot of rubles on delivery systems and subsequently reduce the carbon footprint associated with nuclear war.

Or the economic collapse. And many around NORAD are more concerned about the extreme drought conditions for years, especially on the High Plains. Some private water wells on the Range above CO Springs have gone dry. Reservoirs might go dry, if the drought continues. Not much snowpack on the peaks. The runoff came very early and has already come and gone. Looks like a very dry summer ahead.
People are moving out because of the economy (foreclosures), drought, etc. Many businesses in tiny towns (far apart from each other) on the Range above the Springs have closed. This area was very sparsely populated anyway--probably more mountain lions and bears (in the huge forests) on this wide open space than people. Not many cattle, either. Grazing has been poor, and hay, very expensive. There are concerns about the last of the grazing leases being discontinued with resulting higher taxes.

Hardened structures have been around a long time. To think all of the sudden we just learned of EMP is nonsense. All highly critical military equipment is hardened.

12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can withstand it? Revelation 6: 12-17
That awful scenario, which will happen someday, sounds to me like a global magnetic pole shift, causing worldwide and massive earthquakes. The Bible describes global leadership retreating to their bunkers (like Cheyenne Mountain). The dust kicked up would be devastating. The "sky rolling up like a scroll" sounds to me like incredible roll clouds as the atmosphere attempts to catch up.

What America needs is to produce things once again.
Bring back manufacturing, from the Peoples Republic of China.
Just saying. 342 billion dollars in national trade deficit just last year.
And it’s getting even worse next year.

Did we REALLY move our capabilities out into the open, given the size and capabilities of the Russian (and Chinese for that matter) arsenals? Hint: they never went away.
Are our generals THAT STUPID? REALLY?

The pole shift will be mostly calm, save for the deadly pall of cosmic radiation primarily from the sun that will rain down on all living things until the field strength is restored.
That is the dirty little secret they don’t talk about...
