Maya Angelou Stamp Includes Quote That Isn't Hers
AOL News ^ | Apr 7th 2015 | Staff

Maya Angelou was known for her inspirational and thought-provoking quotes, so it's only fitting that a stamp commemorating her features one. A new postage stamp that was unveiled in a dedication ceremony Tuesday morning celebrating the late literary icon aimed to do just that. It features her image with the quote, "A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song." Except that quote ... isn't Angelou's.

They looked to Obama to authenticate something? Now, thats a good one.

The answer is obvious. Libs think its something she should have said. Thats enough for them.

Okay, I appreciate the explanation. That makes sense.

One would have to wonder what the creator of that poster was thinking. What a bonehead mistake.

Take care.

Absolutely hilarious. Which dumbass at the USPS failed to check the quote?

Probably the same one who selected a Mexican bird to put on an American stamp honoring John James Audubon's American Bird Folio.

Mynah birds have answers, but almost always to the wrong questions.

That simply makes her even more of a hero for the sex-obsessed Left.

“As for the unfortunate mangling of his name, James Earl Jones said through his agent that “I think we have much bigger things to worry about.”

Always liked him.

It's an OK quote, and far better than anything Maya Angelou wrote.

I say leave it as is. :)

Maya was known for appropriating the quotes of others.

If I wrote like she did, I would be appropriating other's work as well.

Actually, its exactly what birds do.

Not only that, but one bird will chase another, trying to get an answer to a question pretty much posed by all males to females, no matter what the species.

She looks dumb enough to have made the statement.

But was smart enough to steal it.

A civilian comittee comes up with the proposal for new stamps but one would think that the PS headquarters brass would be more careful about checking such things. Maybe the vetting was assigned to a diverse panel.

When I was in college, we had a section on poetry and I found an old poem that predated Maya and was a bout why the caged bird sings - the words were not the same and it had much more depth of feeling. Wish I could find it again - it was in an old book in the library and may not be one that many have read - probably never be found on the internet because it would show that she didn’t get inspired about a quote - she probably found it in an old and arcane book and “adapted” it to suit her.

**This is not the first such mistake. President Obama falsely attributed the sentence to Angelou during the presentation of the 2013 National Medal of Arts and National Humanities Medal.

The stamp was released on Tuesday during an event in Washington D.C. that included First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, activist and poet Nikki Giovanni and Angelou’s grandson Colin Johnson.**

I was watching a Show about the Concorde. Apparently, Angelou flew it all the time. She was a one percent Poet.
